Transit to Maryland Stadium?

Submitted by Dr. Detroit on October 31st, 2019 at 11:54 AM

I am considering traveling to this week's game at Maryland via Amtrak.

Does anybody have experience with this?  According to Google Maps I would get off at New Carroll & take a LONG bus ride.  Would it be better to continue on to Union Station & take the Metro?  Then what?

Looking into how much a mess this might be has me considering staying home...  (Rutgers is a LOT easier to get to by train.)

I think your best option would be getting off at New Carrolton and taking an Uber.  Also, the bus ride  from that station to the campus is only a half hour which doesn't seem too bad to me.

Taking the train to Union Station won't buy you much of anything in terms of convenience.

Going through Union Station would easily get the job done.  Once you make it to the College Park Metro station there is a free shuttle that runs every 10 minutes or so that will drop you a few blocks from the stadium.  As for the Metro trip that will likely take you about 30 minutes assuming you can hit the transfers reasonably and cost $3-$4 each way (plus $2 to purchase the fare card).

I have no experience with buses from New Carrollton so I can't speak to that.

The last option would be to grab an Uber/Lyft from New Carrollton Metro up to the stadium.  This is likely the quickest option but also the priciest unless you are splitting it.

No matter what enjoy the game!

take an uber as close as you can get and then walk.  if you can drive, do the same.  you'll see many roads basically shut down and tons of people who park far away and just walk.

To echo what everyone else has said, I think uber from New Carrolton is probably your move from Amtrak. Union Station is red line, so you'd need to metro to Gallery Place/Chinatown and catch a green line train, and even then its like a 25-30 min walk to the stadium.

Can't make it this year unfortunately, but it was a surprisingly easy uber trip last time to get to the game from downtown DC. If you can catch a car even earlier, the better.

No, you’d take the red line to Fort Totten (4 stops from Union) and then the Green line to college Park (3 more stops). It’s about 20 minutes on the train plus waiting for a transfer at Fort Totten.

That said, the Nationals World Series parade is occurring Saturday at 2, so while I’m not a big fan of Uber/Lyft, I’d recommend it from New Carrollton as well, since trains might be crowded for a competing event, particularly near Union Station.

There is a Metro Station (Greenline which you can jump on from Union Station-via-transfer at Gallery place) at College Park but it's a hump to get to the stadium from there but an Uber or taxi should make shorter work of it. Configuration of campus and roads in and out are highly dubious on the urban planning scale.

Is there a way for you to get to Riverdale via Amtrak?  There's a MARC stop there, and it's much, much closer than New Carrollton.

Going to Union Station almost certainly isn't worth it - you'd have to take the red line to Gallery Place, transfer to the green line, and then take it almost to the end.  It's certainly doable, but seems like you're adding a lot of transfers to still be a 20+ minute walk from the stadium.  Either way, have an Uber take you as close as possible to the stadium after you get off wherever, unless you're leaving yourself plenty of time to spare.

Good luck, and see you there?

Def the green line College Park station is the closest and then from there a quick Ubee ride will get you to the stadium.

Maybe have a plan A like I'll Ubee from the Amtrak stop and then when you get there see what the traffic is like and if it looks too crazy hop on that metro over to the college park station.

It's def not a straight shot there.
