Talking DL

Submitted by gobluedave on

First off, I'm super excited about our DL next year.  Who do you think starts?  Does Gary start?  There will be an awesome competition between him and Taco this fall. Regardless of who starts there's going to be a great rotaion.  But one concern of mine is Mone & Hurst going pro early, leaving us with not a whole lot in 17 but anyway back to next year....

1st team: Wormley, Glasgow, Hurst, Gary

2nd team: Taco, Mone, Godin, Marshall

3rd team: Johnson, Pallante, Dwumfour, Kemp

Only counter to your logical argument is that this staff will want to put Gary in a position to get hype ASAP for recruiting and national buzz. If this means a nominal starting position then he will start but only if it doesn't put the larger goals for the team in jeopardy.

There is no way on God's great green earth that Gary plays behind Charlton at SDE.  In fact, I think Gary could push Charlton off the field in short yardage even at WDE.

I see it like this:

NT

  1. Glasgow
  2. Mone
  3. Hurst
  4. Gary

3T

  1. Hurst
  2. Gary
  3. Wormley
  4. Glasgow

SDE

  1. Wormley
  2. Gary
  3. Charlton
  4. Godin (but why not Hurst?)

WDE

  1. Charlton
  2. Gary
  3. Marshall

This, by the way, is exactly why I thought it was a good idea for Henry to leave.  Henry would obviously have made our team better, but he would have ended up seeing his snaps cut in his senior year.  That's a bad situation for him.  Good luck in the draft, brother.

The transition of playing college ball shouldn't be much of a challenge compared to other signees playing on the DL.

First Team: Taco, Gary, Glasgow, Wormley

Second Team: Hurst, Mone, Godin, Marshall (with johnson or dwumfour occasionally rotating in

I don't know who will start, but I don't think it matters much. All eight of the top guys should get plenty of rotation time. I'm pumped that we have two full lines of excellent players. Our Dline has been a strength the last few years, but if it had a weakness, it was that sometimes we couldn't generate much of a pass rush without blitzing. I think this will be the year that we get a great natural pass rush as well and this unit is going to be a terror vs run AND pass.

The trick will be coming up with a good set of linebackers though.  Last year we were exploited by not having guys who were good at reliably filling the gaps and getting to the ball.  As good as our DL is, we need solid play from the LB's.  I'm not worried much about the DB's either.  They'll be excellent.

The LB play wasn't really exposed until injuries wore down our Dline. With so much depth on the line next year, barring terrible injury luck we should be able to stay strong down the stretch and keep some of the heat off the LBs.

to see how he does.  He may not be a starter to begin with, but if he does as expected, he could be by later in the season.  I imagine they will experiment to see which formations and teammates he works best with.

I think Gary starts at wde this year due to personnel and the fact we need somebody who can consistently get to the qb. But I could se him taking over for Henry.

I'm wondering how people compare the two.  I know Gary is listed as a DT, but I think he most likely plays end for UM, at least at first, and only slides inside as neccessary.  I know there isn't much difference in their class rank.  Gary was #1 and Bosa #3, but other than that I don't know much on the two's different skills sets.  J. Bosa was phenomenal and it looks like the younger brother is just as good.  Do we expect Gary to be as dominant against OSU as J. Bosa was against us or will their o-lines be better than ours the past few years?

I think with Gary's speed at 4.74 40 time he could play any place on the line even though he's 295. With that being said Bosa at about 30 pounds lighter than Gary would probably be best suited for SDE or WDE rather than a DT spot

  • Depending on nutrition/training, this may be the biggest line in a long time. A starting line of Wormley/Glasgow/Hurst/Taco is about 10 pounds lighter (listed weight) than Wormley/Glasgow/Henry/Ojemudia or RJS but Glasgow and Hurst could add some good weight and when Gary is in for Hurst or Wormley or whoever then he is probably not giving any back and Mone is obviously bigger than Glasgow.
  • After seeing how Brown used Steven Daniels I understand Kemp at MLB. My guess is he plays right away and we see a lot of zone blitz from him.
  • Mone coming back means a legit two-deep like there almost was to begin 2015. I am happy he played as a freshman.
  • I hope we see rotation from the young guys. We all know depth is scary next year and I am not opposed to burning redshirts for guys who may be depended on heavily next year.
  • Somebody is going to surprise and my guess is it will be Shelton or Ron Johnson or Reuben Jones (if he ends up back there) by virtue of the lack of depth at WDE.
