statistical comparison between '09 Forcier & '06 McCoy
Not really trying to say Tate is the 2nd coming of McCoy at all. I just remember Tate comparing himself to a 'Colt McCoy but with a stronger arm', and for my own curiosity, decided to look at their stats through the first 5 games of their collegiate careers. To be fair, I would be shocked if Tate ended up w/ 29 TDs- 7INTs as Colt did in his remarkable freshman year.
anyway, blah blah blah, here are some numbers:
Tate Forcier (Through 5 games)
W 4, L 1 (key win against ND + 6 4th Q TD drives)
71-119 Passing (59.7%), 894 YDS, 9 TD, 3 INT
Colt McCoy (2006, Through 5 games)
W 4, L 1 (loss at home to Ohio St, 4 wins against cupcakes)
69-97 (71.1%), 846 YDS, 10 TD, 2 INT
Now, McCoy ended up throwing for 2500+ yds, completing 68%+ of his passes w/ the aforementioned 29-7 TD-INT ratio. Texas finished 10-3 w/ a win in the Alamo Bowl. Interesting to note also that Colt seemingly regressed a bit as a sophomore (18 INTS) before his breakout Jr year.
ESPN's player page indicates Tate is on pace for 2146 yds, 22-7 TD-INT. a 10-3 record is, IMO, the upper limit of what we could hope for this year, with 7-6 the opposite end of the spectrum (obviously, including a bowl game as the 13th game, if we're able to eek out 2 more wins - god i hope so).
I could see Tate getting to 2000 yards, 20 TDs and 10 INTS... however, I don't see him getting up to Colt's final stats, if only because Rich Rod definitely would prefer to run a higher percentage of the time. McCoy threw the ball 30+ times in 5 games that year.
The striking difference in the 2 QB's freshman stats is completion percentage. Do we have a tally of 'officially' dropped passes? I don't remember who Colt was throwing to in '06 (was that Limas Sweed era??), but I'd venture to say probably better receivers than M has now. I've definitely seen tate make his share of poor throws, but I know there've been a plethora of drops, as well. Coming into this season, Forcier's rep was a deadly accurate thrower. has this held up? Considering the types of passes this offense is built around, it shouldn't be unreasonable to expect >60% accuracy, which is a line Tate's fluttering around at the moment.
anyway, just some thoughts and stats on Young Mr Forcier. he's been great to this point. here's to hoping he keeps this up! he'll have a clunker or 2 at some point... it's inevitable. but he's exciting as all hell.

Colt was a "Redshirt Freshmen". I don't think I'm too out of line from what we have already seen to hope for a similar or better career out of Tate vs Colt.

you're right. totally overlooked that. could've sworn he wasn't a 5th year senior. anyway, given Tate's self-comparison, just thought I'd check the stats.

for using the word plethora

A plethora is a whole bunch of something. Also see myriad, profusion, bounty, ampleness, copiousness, or "a lot."
We would also accept a "crapstack," a "$#!t-ton," or a "f*ck-load."

I know what a plethora is. I just wanted to take the opportunity to post the Three Amigos clip, titled "What is a Plethora."

Going by much cooler-sounding first names (as compared to their actual first name).
Robert "Tate" Forcier
Daniel "Colt" McCoy

at least he didn't go by Bert or something.
Bert Forcier hardly strikes fear into opponents...

for whatever reason. +1

I agree Bert wouldn't work.
"Brute" on the other hand...

I don't think "Todd Forcier" would work at all.
And that goes double for "Percy," "Leslie," and "Gaylord."
Not gonna do it. Wouldn't be prudent.

Just to add a couple things:
Both McCoy and Forcier are "old" for their high school classes. September birthdays can really go either way, and in each case the parents probably put these kids in kidnergarter just before their 6th birthdays.
McCoy, then, with his redshirt, was basically 20 when his career began, a full year older than Tate, who was right around his 19th birthday as the season began (still impressive). So McCoy had that extra year in his program plus an additional year of physical growth, which is huge at that age.
I'll recommend the book "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell to possibly explain Tate's gift for throwing on the run. If he has been groomed for so long as the story goes, its perfectly understandable why he looks so comfortable breaking out of the pocket and throwing those strikes. He has to have rehearsed this so many more times than any other 19 year old. Can't wait to see what it looks like at 22.

Todd Forcier would work either. Or Edward Forcier.

back to a question I had... do we have any 'official' count of dropped passes so far?
I'll check the UFR's I suppose.

The UFR receiver chart is probably your best bet. Not sure why drops isn't tracked in the college game.

Sweed, Quan Cosby and Billy Pittman.

Didn't see anyone mention yards on the ground, according to MGoBlue.com TF's rushing stat line looks like this
RUSHING GP Att Gain Loss Net Avg TD Long Avg/G
-----------------------------------------------------------
Forcier, Tate 5 53 240 86 154 2.9 2 31 30.8
I don't know what McCoy's rushing numbers were, but Tate has run for a couple TD's. The Loss part is probably exaggerated a bit by the couple of bad snaps vs Indiana...
October 8th, 2009 at 1:09 PM ^
Through 5 games:
20 attempts, 59 yards gained, 2.95 average, 1 TD
I couldn't find the pos and neg #'s - sorry.
Week 6 colt went against OU and had the following stat line:
11-18, 108 yds, 2 TDs, 0 INTs, 6 rushes for 11 yards, 0 TD in a 28-10 win.
