Snap Count Depth Chart - MSU

Here's the Snap Count Depth Chart for the MSU game. As always, a couple of notes:

Offense:

  • LG: Karsen Barnhart started. After a few drives he was replaced by Trevor Keegan, who had been out injured the prior week. Keegan played for a while and then I saw him get up slow and Barnhart came back in and played the rest of the way.
  • Zinter was back and played the full game.
  • Daylen Baldwin barely played at all this game. I'm guessing the ankle is a real issue and might be impacting his ability to get out and make blocks.
  • TE - as usual, Honigford gets the start, but All & Schoonmaker carry most of the load. The TE snaps per play this week was only 1.35. That is the lowest of any relevant game this year. TE snaps per play is derived by adding up all of the TE snaps and dividing by the number of plays. It gives you an idea of how many TE's are on the field for any given set. Michigan still doesn't go 5 wide with receivers. At least one TE is almost always on the field and almost half of the snaps there are two TE's on the field.
  • Trente Jones returned in his 6th O-lineman role for just a few snaps after not getting any 6th o-lineman snaps the past two games.

Defense:

  • There was the different front the opened with which was 4 DE's, 2 DT's, 1 LB, & 4 DB's. Most of the game it was the traditional stuff, although the 6-1 made a few more appearances.
  • Junior Colson took a large majority of the WLB snaps which was a first. They had been evenly split with Hill-Green prior.
  • DJ Turner is the official starting corner opposite Gray. Green is now the back-up.
  • Aiden is a beast playing almost every snap and Ojabo really did work playing in only 56% of total snaps.

Here's the chart:

All year Michigan tried to make Johnson the #1 receiver out of necessity. I think he has a lot of talent but as I was watching the MSU game and compared Anthony's game to Johnsons' it became clear Johnson is best suited to be a great #2 possession receiver with the ability to go deep and Anthony has what it takes to become a truly elite primary receiver.

I agree that he is definitely not a #1 receiver, but I don't think he should be our number 2 possession receiver either. The best possession receiver I can remember was Jason Avant. Caught literally every ball that came his way (and several that were borderline uncatchable). Johnson is the exact opposite: frequent drops and what appears to be a complete inability to catch a 50/50 ball or even a contested throw with a DB trying to break it up. I had high hopes for him coming into the season, but I just don't see it. When Wilson gets healthy, I'd play him and Anthony as the starting 2 WRs.

Whittley is basically on the third line for the D-tackles. In prior games, the defense has not faced many snaps.

The depth chart is basically:

- Mazi Smith, Cris Hinton

- Welschof, D. Jeter

- Speight, Whittley

Kris Jenkins goes back and forth between tackle and end depending on the down and distance.

There are not a lot of snaps left for someone you are not building the future on and isn't in great shape.

I think that’s about the biggest discrepancy in snaps we’ve seen between the two RBs. Unfortunately, Corum had his worst game with the extra snaps. Looking forward to him snapping back. Throw him a screen early this week just to get the drop out of his system.

Very close. Rutgers was the biggest with Corum getting 67% of the snaps to Haskins 33% (excluding other RB's). For MSU it was Corum 59%, Haskins 41%.

WMU: Corum 24, Haskins 19

Wash: Corum 39, Haskins 34

NIU: Corum 20, Haskins 12

Rutgers: Corum 38, Haskins 19

Wisc: Corum 29, Haskins 39

Nebraska: Corum 44, Haskins 42

NW: Corum 44, Haskins 39

MSU: Corum 49, Haskins 34

Good for Erick All; he had a great game, hauling in 10-of-12 targets for 98 yards.

He seems to have taken a big step forward this season. After catching a total of 13 passes his first two years, he already has 26 this season.

Hope he can score that first TD soon.

The O line being dinged up, and having to rely on Barnhart so much, really hurt visibly. I do usually watch O line play, actually, but it was extra noticeable to me this time from early in the game that Barnhart was in there so much (as usual, he was so noticeable means for not-good reasons). Hope they get healthy and get back to paving D lines
