PWO Jared Davis from Frankenmuth

Submitted by Imjesayin on

Earlier this week Michigan picked up Jared Davis as a Preferred Walk On from my hometown, and new football hotbed, Frankenmuth!

Frankenmuth is of course known for anything but football, which is why it's interesting that he'll be the 2nd current UM football player from Frankenmuth, a town of 4,898 people. He joins his "role model" and current walk-on Nick Volk, a 5'11" 250 fullback and also a former Frankenmuth QB. That means Frankenmuth has a higher per-capita representation on the roster then any other city except Bloomfield Hills.

"Davis played quarterback and defensive back for the Eagles, leading Frankenmuth to the Division 5 semifinals. He completed 62 of 110 passes for 1,225 yards and 13 touchdowns, adding 966 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground.

He is expected to play defensive back for the Wolverines. At Frankenmuth, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound senior had 70 tackles, four interceptions and nine pass deflections."

It also says he runs a 4.7 second 40, which gets 3 fakes out of 5.

I will give up my mgoblog boycott for this thread! Yay! Had no idea! The Davis family is fabulous. I will have to call his Mom and congratulate them. Great kid!

Some of the best ever smoked wings at Slow Bones BbQ. Wednesday wings are $1 each. The wings are 3 piece. Just south and around the corner from Kerns at the light.

Swan Valley Alum here.

Frankenmuth chicken is waaaaay overrated.

Watched Muth knock off Ithaca this year in the playoffs.  Impressive team win on the road.

The Frankenmuth Brewery has improved there on premise beer thanks to a new head brewer.  The bottle and draft stuff is all contract brewed out of state.  I will say the buffalo chicken egg rolls at the Brewery are on point.  The Black Forrest is closed and for sale.

Another shout out to the Lager Mill craft beer store and beer museum.  Good selection and pricing.

Indoor pool with kids are fun.  I can just picture WD, full on Jordan gear, on the weekend at the pool by himself eating chicken.

due to opening up a new branch in that city. Lived near the mall right near Saginaw Lutheran Seminary. There were parts of the town I really liked. There appeared to be a concerted effort to maintain historically significant buildings w/special emphasis on keepingt these buildings intact. This was particulary noted in areas of the downtown area. I've always appreciated the arhitecture associated with the late 1800s,, early 1900s, featuring high ceilings and detailed finish work. This is rather common place in Chicago, particulary in bars and the same was true in downtown Saginaw. Impressive.

Only traveling to the east side occasionally, usually for a sporting event, prolonged exposure made the topogrhacical differences rather obvious. A lifelong resident of Michigan, I never took the time to even ponder if it were possible, but sure enough, I ended up in the one county in Michigan without a lake. Obviously,, there were many nearby in Midland and other cities in that area. Was impressed with the obvious philantrhopic gestures of Dow, examples of which could be found easily throughout the entire city of Midland, with its many parks, together with the extremely well-maintained presence of the entire city really.  As stated, the physical differences between the e and w sides of the state were quick to recognize, and so too was the effort made by virtually all city commissions in that area to provide a large and diverse number of events for the entire population. Events, ranging from free concerts to art fairs were common occurrences.

The football, of course, was different, and in my mind, of a sub par level. But this was limited to the smaller schools, say class B and below. I know all the talent in the state is either in the DPSL and the Catholic  League. I did watch wha I thinkt was was a quarterfinal matchup between Oarkridge and Freeland which ran from a Deleware wing-T formation. The simplicity of the offense really puzzled me. It became obvious early a plan of iso between the tackles wasn't going to work and I kept waiting for one of the many plays, based largely on deception and traps this offense allows, but they never came. I can't even recall an attempt at establishing a viable passing threat. Ended 4 TDs to 0 in favor of Oakridge. As an aside, but of possible interest to some was the fact Oakridge was coached by Jack Schugars, a graduate of Muskegon High, who never played a down of organized football in his life. A graduate of the late 60s, possibly early 70s, when the Big Red Indian was still permitted and a vital part of the Big Red Spirit Brigade, and in addition to leading the band and cheerleaders onto the field, performed an Indian dance, signalling, I guess, preparation for the battle was complete and, as usual, the ensuing battle would be one-sided. Much like the drum major of the MI band, the fans waitied with anticipation for the Big Red Indian to throw, with obvious force, the spear into the field, always drawing loud cheers from the crowd, sgnalling the end of pre-game festivities and the game was set to start.

I had really never heard of a football coach that had never played the game becoming head coach at a tradition rich football school - I know for sure, he led them to four state titles, possibly more - but that was, in large part, due to an usual set of circumstances. Oardide was a relatively new school and was about a decade away from being recognized as a power. This allowed Jack the time to attend numerous clinics and lean on Roger Chiaverini, long time Big Red Coach, and later Muskegon Catholic Head Coach. Obviously, he was a good student. As the school grew and holds steady now in Class 5, it became obvious when his apprenticeship was over and the Eagles began winning at a pace similar to all the MI high shool powers.

I remember being at the game in which it was announced he had been selected into the Hall of Fame, and that was years before he hung up the whistle. It was during this period that Dusty Fairfield took over as head coach at Ravenna, and a few years later, Collins at Montague. The W. MI. Conference became recognized as the most well balanced conference in the state, with half of its teams winning state titles and one season had representatives in the state finals from two difference classifications. I am sure there are others w/o actual football experience that had a love for the game that drew them into coaching, but I'm not certain any other non player enjoyed the same level of success he did.

Corey Malone-Hatcher is the first St. Joe Bear since my h.s. quarterback, Mike Gillette, to earn a scholarship on the Meechigan feetsball team. St. Joseph isn't much larger than Frankenmuth and we don't have your notoriety or the chicken. (I've never seen more billboards in my life than the Frankenmuth ones.)

Happily we have another motivated Wolverine aboard. Best of luck to Jared Davis. Long may his health be superior to that of the Frankenmuth chickens, his flesh well-seasoned and juicy being none of my beezewax and Jim Harbaugh's chicken preference being Cracker Barrel.

I grew up and now live in Bloomfield Hills. How in the world do we have 4 kids on the team? Only thing I can think of is Detroit Country Day might put out a few kids, but those kids aren't really from Bloomfield Hills.

Hey, first time I've seen North Branch on here. My Moms from North Branch, my Dad's from Clifford. My Cousin owns the Subway in North Branch, and my Grandpa and Uncle owned the Bar in Clifford. Lapeer North Branch Millington Frankenmuth Barns Lake n Vassar. Aside from chicken and quality Walk On Football players, Frankenmuth has an awesome Balloon Festival in the Summer, it's very cool. Also, the Ice Sculpting Festival and Goofy dog obstacle races.
