OT - You think UM's Defense is messed up (Canadian Football is very odd)

I believe you mean they need to kick the ball oat.

There's something called a "single," where the kicking team scores a point on what would be a touchback in American football. Since it was the last play, once the receiving team saw they couldn't get the ball out of the end zone, they punted it back. At which point the team that attempted the field goal kicked it back in to score the single, and the receiving team tried to kick it out again but failed and the ball was covered in the end zone, resulting in a touchdown.
It's like a safety, except only on kicks/punts, and you keep the ball even if you're singled on.

Let me get this straight, your talking about football.
Oh you crazy Canadians...

Game was tied 30-30 with a few seconds left. Montreal kicked a FG but missed. However, if Toronto does not get the ball out of the endzone, Montreal gets a single point (A Rouge as Americans love to say). Toronto didn't have room to run it out so they punted. Montreal's kicker caught it and punted it back in to the endzone, again looking for the single point. Toronto couldn't clear it and Montreal recovered for the TD.
Irrelevant that Montreal recovered though because the ball never left the Toronto endzone. Would have been either a 31-30 or 37-30 win for Montreal.
Also the play was reviewed to make sure 'No yards" was given on each punt. Players are not allowed within a 5-yard bubble of the returner until he touches it or it results in a 15 yard penalty.

You had me there for a second...but I'm still pretty sure they just kept kicking the damn ball until that got boring. Nice try though.

What they all said, in regards to the rules. If the kicking team (Punt or FG) kicks it through the end zone, its a point. The defending team can catch it and down it, again for a point.
The ball is also live on punts, meaning no letting punts roll, you either catch it and run or fair catch it. Or watch the other team run it in for a TD.
Also in Canadian rules, you can have 2 men in motion at once.

I don't think i have ever been so confused in my entire life...

Almost a rouge, but after that, I'm lost. Nearly as confusing as when the Rough Riders played the Roughriders

Uh. A missed FG is one point? So the other team has to advance the ball out of the endzone? If the kicking team recovers in the end zone, it's a TD? What?
November 1st, 2010 at 7:06 PM ^
Sounds like you've got it

Gallon should have kicked the ball back to PSU when he muffed if the game was played in Happy Calgary?
November 1st, 2010 at 7:21 PM ^
Otherwise it's just giving up possession

Poop (or punt) back and forth forever. ))<>((

If I were Trestman, I would plead for the Minnesota job to get away from this.

why the CFL failed in San Antonio.

This isn't the first time this has happened, something very similar occured in a Grey Cup game way back when.
Say what you might about the Canadian game, but it always allows for weird and exciting plays. American football is robotic in comparison ( I still love it though ).

They do college-style OT (but from further back, might be midfield, not sure). After one team had forced a turnover in the first half of OT, they elected to go for a rouge on their possession, but the defending team managed to get it out of the end zone and won in the second OT.

...there are elements of our culture that are not easily understood outside of the Great White North.
November 1st, 2010 at 10:39 PM ^
That is fucking awesome. Hope they incorporate that into American Football.

Anybody else notice their field goal posts are right on the goal line, must be why their end zone is like an acre.
November 2nd, 2010 at 2:56 AM ^
we could score on missed FGs.

I don't fully understand what just happened, but it was awesome. It reminded me of that Australian football game that was on TV a few weeks ago. The players looked like they were making up the rules as they went.
American football needs more of this weirdness.
