OT - You think UM's Defense is messed up (Canadian Football is very odd)

Well, at least it's not this.

The day Michigan is doing pretty much anything that is seen here (other than missing the field goal) is the day I officially jump off the bandwagon

There's something called a "single," where the kicking team scores a point on what would be a touchback in American football. Since it was the last play, once the receiving team saw they couldn't get the ball out of the end zone, they punted it back. At which point the team that attempted the field goal kicked it back in to score the single, and the receiving team tried to kick it out again but failed and the ball was covered in the end zone, resulting in a touchdown.

It's like a safety, except only on kicks/punts, and you keep the ball even if you're singled on.

Game was tied 30-30 with a few seconds left. Montreal kicked a FG but missed. However, if Toronto does not get the ball out of the endzone, Montreal gets a single point (A Rouge as Americans love to say). Toronto didn't have room to run it out so they punted. Montreal's kicker caught it and punted it back in to the endzone, again looking for the single point. Toronto couldn't clear it and Montreal recovered for the TD.

Irrelevant that Montreal recovered though because the ball never left the Toronto endzone. Would have been either a 31-30 or 37-30 win for Montreal.

Also the play was reviewed to make sure 'No yards" was given on each punt. Players are not allowed within a 5-yard bubble of the returner until he touches it or it results in a 15 yard penalty.

What they all said, in regards to the rules.  If the kicking team (Punt or FG) kicks it through the end zone, its a point.  The defending team can catch it and down it, again for a point.

The ball is also live on punts, meaning no letting punts roll, you either catch it and run or fair catch it.  Or watch the other team run it in for a TD.

Also in Canadian rules, you can have 2 men in motion at once.

This isn't the first time this has happened, something very similar occured in a Grey Cup game way back when.

Say what you might about the Canadian game, but it always allows for weird and exciting plays. American football is robotic in comparison ( I still love it though ).

I don't fully understand what just happened, but it was awesome.  It reminded me of that Australian football game that was on TV a few weeks ago.  The players looked like they were making up the rules as they went.

American football needs more of this weirdness.
