OT: [Weekend Drinking Thread] Really nice bourbon to buy for guests who love bourbon?

Submitted by chuck bass on
Price no object (within reason), but reasonably easy to find. Just need one bottle to entertain a couple of bourbon-pref guests on Sunday.

What's everyone else sipping on this weekend?

The QC is very suspect -- rumor has it the ABV ranges from 10-26%. They sell it in 3 packs and I bought two of them at an air force base near Tokyo and drank them with my boss one night at my apartment in Yokohama.

We woke up at three the next afternoon.

A couple of other, pricier, niche whiskeys that I really like are:

F.E.W. bourbon and rye, out of Evanston Illinois.  The town is where the temperance movement started, and the initials in the name are those of one of the movement founders, so it's a nice thematic, pro-booze choice, too.

Also, Dad's Hat, out of PA. This is a "Monongahela" style rye whiskey, a sharp and spicy Pennsyl-tucky potion.

Go with the Booker's it makes a better presentation as a gift, Buffalo Trace is good but a little more common so get both keep the Trace and enjoy the Christmas Holliday

$400 for the 10 year and it's not anything different than a Weller. The only Pappy I've been impressed with is the 20 yr and that goes for about $5K now so... No way. Pappy is just stupid now. Nothing consumable is worth $5K. I won't pay more than $200 for any liquor. It's just not worth it.

You will have better luck finding Woodford Double Oaked. As others mentioned Angels Envy is also fantastic. If all of those are sold out then look for Basil Haydens or Knob Creek. Bulleit and Buffalo Trace are good as far as price/taste ratio. Bargain bin choices- Evan Williams, Ancient Ancient Age

We are planning my daughter's wedding at an old elegant hotel in St. Louis.  For cocktails you can choose from a "liuxury," "premium" or "call list."  The luxury bourbons are Basil Hayden's and Gentleman Jack.  Other luxury brands are Ketel One, Bacardi Select, Bombay Sapphire, Macallan 12 and Don Julio.  The Premium brands:  Absolut, Bacardi 8, Bombay, Chivas Regal, Maker's Mark, Jack Daniel's annd Paron.  The call list:  oh, never mind.

For comparison purposes, we also looked at onne of the other elegant hotels here.  The bournon on its top list was Bulleitt.

and prefer Bulleit rye; goes for about $25/ bottle, seems as good as the expensive stuff. But then again, don’t get me started on single malt Scotch.

Yep. Only way I can get it is secondary market. They go for $75 or so which is still somewhat reasonable I guess. I hate what bourbon has become. It's frustrating, but I just drink what I like and can find. That's mostly 1920 or Evan Williams Single barrel vintage these days. I still go "hunting" which just means waiting in lines in the cold but the older I get the less I am willing to do for fine bourbon. They've already priced me out of pappy. Hopefully it doesn't happen with ETL and Rock Hill...

Just bought at 1792 Barrel strength for a coworker.
Also bought him a Bookers last year.
Colonel Taylor comes in different varieties. If you can find some of the rare ones (Tornado is the holy grail in that lineup), buy it.

I know you said Bourbon, but Jameson's Black Barrel is a fantastic Irish Whisky. My favorite.

1792 is a really inexpensive, good bourbon. Jefferson reserve is delicious, as is basil Hayden, larceny, four roses, and of course Breckinridge. Alllllll delicious!!!
