OT - Row Designation in the Big House

Submitted by funkifyfl on

Sorry if I'm missing a board guideline, but I have a quick question regarding row designation at the Big House as I'm trying to get some tickets for Illinois. Several sections at the Big House do not appear to reach field, more specifically Sections 5, 7, 8, 10, 14, 16, 17, 27, 29, 30, 32, 36, 38, 39, and 41 (OCD is an awful thing). My question is whether seats in these sections use the same row numbering as the others.

In other words, is Section 5, Row 1, actually at the same height as say Section 6, Row 20? Or alternatively, does Section 5 just "start" at Row 20, and Section 5, Row 20 is right next to Section 6, Row 20? Thanks in advance for any info.

The numbers always match, but what confuses people is that the number is engraved on the far edge of the step (so you can see it while going down the steps) but that puts it in line with the benches for the next row down. So people think they need to step down one more row even though the most logical thing to do would be to stop with your feet on the number you want.

The rows start at field level with row AA, row BB, and then rows 1-96 (I believe). A row is the same number all around the stadium. I don't even know where you're seeing "Section 5, Row 1." Everywhere I look lists it as Section 5, Row 21.

Speaking of row numbers, pay attention to the number of the bench itself - that is the correct row number - and not the one engraved in the concrete steps.  For some reason the number on the steps is off by one, or at least it is in my section.  That's been true for several years and I don't know why it's never been corrected.

Are the rows the same "height" - Yes? Put another way, row 9 will go around the stadium in a ring - if you walked on top of it you could circle (oval) the stadium without changing rows. Row 21 will be the same "height" regardless of section. All row 21s are next to each other except as noted in * below

But not every section has every row because of how ths stadium is structured. The visitor's sideline is generally shorter (only 89 rows), while everywhere else generally runs to 96 rows, and most corners only start at row 21 (exept those that don't!).

Rows run A, B, 1, 2, 3, etc...

Sections:

  • 1-4, 6, 40, 42-44 all run: A - 89
  • 9-13, 15, 18, 20-26*, 28, 31, 33-35, 37 all run: A-96 (except as noted in star)
  • 7, 8, 10, 14, 16, 17, 19, 27, 29, 30, 32, 36, 38, 39 all run: 21-96
  • 5, 41 all run: 21 - 89

*In 20-26, Sections 21-25 have some carve outs near the top for the "chairback seats" starting at row 84, and which run 85-92 and in these sections and rows the rows will not "line up" like they do almost everywhere else. To confuse you more, in Sections 21 and 25 part of the section does run to 96, while part of it is a seatback section which runs to 92 (divided by aisle).

Because the corner sections start and stop at weird points it can lead to some odd situations where people don't understand their seats. Honestly, the best way to do this is to look a detailed map, but these sections are always 3 apart: 6 & 9, 15 & 18, 28 & 31, 37 & 40 with a set up of a short section on either side and 2 scrunched in between.

You left out section 19 in the list of sections that do not reach the field, but had every other one nailed in your list.

All of the sections that don't reach the field use the same row numbering as the remaining sections. I'm almost certain that Row 21 is as low as the non-field sections go; anything from A up to 20 does not exist in those sections. To answer the question, from Row 21 on up, yes, Sec 5 Row 21 is right next to Sec 6 Row 21, for example; but from Row 20 on down, in that corner, Sec 4 Row 18 is next to Sec 6 Row 18.

Or, to put it another way, from Row 20 on down to Row A, walking clockwise around the stadium, starting at the tunnel, you go through the following sections ... (irrelevant sideline), 4, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 20, (irrelevant sideline), 26, 28, 31, 33, 34, 35, 37, 40, 42, (irrelevant sideline). That list only contains corner and end zone sections and ignored the sidelines.

And, for what it's worth, the west side lower concourse, the only concourse at each end, and the east side upper concourse all lead to stadium entrances at Row 72; the east side lower concourse entrances are at Row 55; and the west side upper concourse entrances are at Row 96, the very top.
