Smart pick. Nice escape valve for Stafford plus a great blocker. Oher would have also been a nice pick but I see no problem with taking a player that can take the pressure off Stafford in the passing game plus provide protection as a blocker. Good pick.

While that's a fair claim, don't forget how much pressure the Lions are under to do everything that they can to help Stafford succeed. First round QBs can be hit or miss, and if you don't invest other picks to help them out, you pretty much doom them from the start. I say props to the Lions for following the Falcons' lead by taking a high QB and then using subsequent picks to make his job easier.

If they really wanted to follow the Falcons' lead they'd put together a halfway decent team before drafting the quarterback. Of all positions on the field, tight end is the biggest luxury. I'd seriously rather have a crappy tight end than a crappy punter. Worst defense in the league, worst offensive line in the league, and both first round picks are skill positions. Un-fucking-believable.

Will help the short passing game. That's why you hire a defensive head coach. Scheme, baby, Scheme. Detroit has been playing musical TE's a long time.

I guess this is what happens when the Lions want another dude to chuck the ball to, but finally realize they'll get picked on at the lunch table if they take another wide receiver. Worst pick ever.

Let's see who they pick with the first pick in the second round. We might still get one of those players some of you guys wanted...

I'm not saying Pettigrew is a bad player, but why pick him in the first round? Was he projected to be a top tier player that wouldn't be available later on?

while i like Pettigrew i agree with most others in this topic. Terrible pick but i called this in the stafford topic but another blunder by the lions. We could have easily taken Mauluaga/Britten or Oher/Laurenites then picked up Coffeman in the 3rd or Ingram in the 6th. Both would help the new QB and both can block.

Considering that they left Oher, Maualalaluga, Laurenitis, etc on the board for a freaking tight end, this will go down as one of the worst picks in Lions history. If there was any doubt that the new Lions brain trust is every bit as incompetent as Millen was, it's gone now. Jesus Tapdancing Christ what fools.

Yes, this will indirectly take some pressure off of Stafford. But why not DIRECTLY take pressure off of him by getting a starting OT (a.k.a. Oher)? IMO, this would help him far more than a TE, as good as Pettigrew may be. If we can score Rey at 33, then I will be somewhat OK with this, but damn we need to do some praying. Either way, you can name a position on the Lions and there is a glaring need there... OT, DT, MLB, S, CB... and the list goes on.

IMO, they should have drafted Oher and Andrew Smith, then picked up Malaluga or a DT with the 33rd pick. The offensive line is the most important part of a football team. Look at what Bill Parcells does, he builds the Oline and Dline, then gets skill players in place. However, if you're not going to win soon and you draft Stafford, you might as well say fuck the defense, it can't get worse, and try to fix the offense first. I'd still have drafted Olineman with the 22nd and 33rd picks though.

The Lions picked 2 great picks. The O-Line is very important, but they are easy to come by and the Lions can pick up a few in FA. Then they can worry about defense.

He should be our starting TE for 10 years. Guy is a very, very good player. No problem with the pick. We have needs at every position. Take the best player available.

Pettigrew is big and fast and he will see plenty of one-on-ones because of Johnson's double teams. The Lions are unlike the Falcons because they don't have a running game, but now they have two viable targets. Pettigrew will be a huge safety valve and while he was a slightly overrated pick, he will be a great asset in Stafford's development.

I love the Pettigrew pick and can you really go wrong picking someone at ANY spot? No. Offense and Defense were/are absolutely terrible so you take the best players on the board. Pettigrew could make the offense VERY tough to match up against within the next couple of seasons with CJ on the outside.

remember we have some young tackles that this staff actually thinks they can coach up. you take a te that is NOT A LUXURY but is a valuable addition to help ot's block... a good te can take a lot of pressure off of the oline... plus with calvin johnson taking a safety he will find himself 1 on 1 with lb's a lot... there must have been something that came down on the ilb's for them to drop so much. and we got a very very very good safety... 3 starters today...
