Isn't this the kid that is going to be kicked off the team if charges were filed?  Didn't we discuss this last week?  Or am I mixing up kids/programs?

It's too bad the board of trustees don't have any more integrity than Gee or Smith do.  It would be nice to see THE Ohio State Univestity clean house and put an emphasis on ethics.  Sadly, their pattern of violations, scandals, investigations, and criminal behavior will probably be enabled and encouraged by excuse-makers at the top.

Finkell said point blank "if he's charged - he's suspended".  I heard him say it directly and have no doubt he'll do it.  The last thing he or anybody else at OSU needs right now is more attention in areas such as this so I'm guessing they'll come down hard on him.  My guess is that he'll get kicked off the team.

Don't forget that Berry was as Pryor buddy and right now TP is not terribly well-loved here in Ohio.

that his arraignment is on December 1, 2011.

I think that means that he'll be suspended by the team through at least that date (even if his lawyer somehow miraculously got the charges dismissed or reduced at the arraignment).

So I expect that Berry is done for the year, and perhaps even for his career at Ohio State.  This will not be anywhere close to resolution by the time the season is over.

These are City of Columbus misdemeanor criminal charges, btw.  Not exactly a 'federal case,' in the colloquial sense.  (And actually, I see they call the charging documents just a summons and complaint, not a warrant and information as might be seen in a felony case.)

I see the perfect out:  Since arraignment isn't until Dec. 1st, he can play until then.  For those that don't know, the arraignment is the formal reading of charges and opportunity for the defendant to plea guilty or not.  Technically, Barry has only been charged with the crimes at this point (indicted), which is arguably not that different than having been sued in civil court (except fthat is really is, because a prosecuter has reviewed the facts and determined to more forward with the indictment).

It will not surprise me in the least to see Barry dress for each game until December 1st, notwithstanding what Fickell has said previously (unless he is more of a standup guy than I give him credit for).

“Junior running back Jaamal Berry, from Miami, Fla., has been suspended from the Ohio State University football team for violating the university’s student-athlete code of conduct,” an Ohio State spokesperson said in a release Wednesday.

I'm curious if this has any effect cumulatively on the upcoming NCAA findings (LOIC, pretty please?)

Berry will likely be done at OSU. He was already occupying a full bench of RBs, but next year we have (or hopefully will have) several RBs lined up to join too. I think Berry has some problems going on that we don't quite no about. I don't think we are getting the full story here and I don't think we ever will, but I hope the kid gets well and moves forward in life.

I'm not a Berry apologist but I have seen this kid out on the town before and have read enough articles to tell you the we all know what's going on.  The kid is kind of a thug who has discipline and drug issues.

I have no doubt in my mind that there isn't more going on here.  I firmly believe he did rough that kid up, and judging by his history with drugs, he may have been under the influence of them.  Unless something comes out to tell me differently, I lack sympathy for him.  Many of the OSU football players that I've seen on this campus have a certain sense of entitlement and feel they are better than everyone else, chalk this up as an example.

Do you have a feel for how many scholarships Ohio will offer next year? And what is the feeling among fans about the NCAA findings on Tatgate, etc. . . . is there any anticipation of any scholarship reductions, or is the sense that all is well, the worst is over, and there will be no significant sanctions?

I have no idea how many schollies we will have, one because I don't follow that kind of that specifically enough and two because I personally think we will lose some when the hammer drops.

The mood is that we all know the hammer will drop and no one knows when or how. I think the vast majority think it won't be too bad.

Personally, I think we avoid LOIC and FTM so no bowl ban. I think we lose 5-10 schollies tops over a 1-3yr span. I think I probably have a rosey outlook though. Gene Smith, while a PR nightmare, knows what he is doing with handling the case before the committee because he is very involved in the NCAA (not because he has connections that he's exploiting, but experience). I also think Gene will step down at the end of the saga.

One prediction I am certain of: Whatever we get, OSU fans will be out raged that it's too harsh, UofM fans will be outraged that it's not harsh enough.

This is pretty much a non-issue though, right? He has three carries all year, two of which gained positive yardage, and hasn't played in a Big Ten game at all. After this year, they still have Hyde and Hall who have gotten most of the non-Herron touches, plus Rod Smith is a frosh and got more carries than Berry anyway. Point is, if Berry was on the team, he wouldn't have an impact so who cares.

With Dunn and Ball expected next year, and Hyde and Hall coming back, we were already looking to convert Smith to an LB, where we might end up thin next year. Berry was a primary kick return option this year, but can be easily replaced with several other, possibly better options.
