Official Snowflake Thread: Offense
Per statements last week, this will be the official snowflake thread for thoughts regarding the offensive playcalling / coaching. There will also be a similar thread for defense. Special teams and coaching snowflake threads can be created as needed by volume, but this thread will be primarily for thoughts on the offensive performance.

How about the horrendous run blocking?
September 21st, 2013 at 11:39 PM ^
Run blocking actually seemed to get better in the second half. Hope that's not a mirage.
September 22nd, 2013 at 1:44 AM ^
Interior guys actually seemed ok on run blocking. The TEs were missing a lot of blocks though. UConn was stacking against the run so they always had a free hitter.
September 21st, 2013 at 11:40 PM ^
120 yards for Fitz, 5 yards per? It was bad in long stretches, it was good in others.
September 21st, 2013 at 11:51 PM ^
I'll have to go back and look, but I felt a lot of our negative runs were RPS type situations. Not that the Oline did that well, but it's not all on them either. It was pretty clear for a stretch there Gardner couldn't complete a pass to save his life, the UConn D sensed it and sold out to stop the run. We play actioned finally on 1st down and almost hit Jehu deep and they backed off a bit. We also made an adjustment to seal the outside edges towards the end there a la against Central Michigan, which worked pretty well for us.
September 22nd, 2013 at 12:38 AM ^
Yeah, I thought the same thing. They were basically daring us to pass for the 3rd quarter.
September 22nd, 2013 at 12:51 AM ^
...was Lewan not being 100%. He didn't have his usual mobility and things got a lot better when he got some TE help. I don't remember a lot of one-TE sets with the TE on Lewan's end of the line before tonight. It was a good idea, too--you want to run behind him but for tonight he was having some trouble getting a seal.
September 21st, 2013 at 11:42 PM ^
Pull your head outta the sand. Gardner was, what, 11/23 with 3 TOs and a few other close fumbles? He looked like HS QB out there. This team is in trouble. We slipped by the TWO WORST TEAMS IN DIV-I BY 4 AND 3 POINTS. This is NOT A GOOD TEAM. Lewan's bullshit didn't change anything last week and it won't change anything this week. Devin is weak minded and generally incompetent. Hoke shows no passion and hasn't motivated the team for TWO STRAIGHT WEEKS. Borgers has called two shit games in a row. And you're going to tell me everything is hunky-dory?

I'm not sure it's the only reason the last three games were close, but I largely support what you are saying. If Devin lessens or eliminates the turnovers, the momentum shifts of each the last three games seem largely different.
Also, several of the turnovers have been of the back-breaking variety (a turnover is never good, but turnovers for pick 6's or giving the opponent a less than 30-yard field immediately after the defense has come off REALLY doesn't help things). From that perspective, I would think it fair to say that the defense has held up fairly well for the positions they have been placed in.

But take out the muff punt, and the fumble for TD, and it wasn't that bad.

And yet, Michigan won.
I though Michigan faced a lot of shitty luck tonight. This team has issues, and say what you will about them...but the fact that they came back from 14 down on the road at nght speaks to their resiliency. Which has been a theme of Hoke teams, they never quit.
But oh boy, they have a lot to work on during the bye, don't they.
September 22nd, 2013 at 1:00 AM ^
But it's bloody UConn. As the announcers said, they may be, literally, the worst team in college football right now. Michigan never should've been down. Fitz should've had holes all night, the defense should've had 3+ sacks, and Devin should've had nearly immaculate pass protection.
There is a very real possibility that Michigan is not good.
September 22nd, 2013 at 1:11 AM ^
four sacks. Though, I agree that the rest wasn't good and they should not have found themselves trailing.
September 22nd, 2013 at 1:30 AM ^
I really do. I was laighing manaically the whole game. Was this real life? Beer was my only friend.
I don't know what this team is yet. Gardner looked nearly perfect against ND...and completely incompetent two weeks in a row later. We were nearly perfect in the red zone...and two weeks in a row I'm fretting a turnover on every snap. The OL is incredibly bad at times tonight. Against UCONN. That really is inexcusable.
But they did win. And it was on the road. At night. Against a sellout crowd that was much more UConn fans than I was expecting. And they were jacked up. And Uconn is one of those teams to fluctuate between turrible and competent. And the offense did look much more coherent in the 2nd half (if still spotty at times)
I'm just trying to remain optimistic because the record still says 4-0, and no matter who you play against...adversity is adversity. And twice the team has responded positively against adversity. The ceiling is still high.

Because there are a bunch young players on the o-line? Okay.

You might be the only sane person in this place. People like you give me hope.
September 21st, 2013 at 11:46 PM ^
I'm usually pretty rational when it comes to this stuff, but the offensive line has regressed year after year. I understand that the line is young, but these guys aren't true freshman. I don't obviously think Funk should be fired tonight, but at some point there needs to be accountability. Our O-Line has more talent than half of the FBS, yet they play like an FCS team.
