Michigan Hockey vs RPI open thread (w/free video link)

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

After a wild ass 5-5 OT tie against #18 Union last night, Michigan makes a short drive to Troy, NY to take on RPI.

Michigan swept RPI last year at Yost. Michigan had to come from behind down 2-1 late to beat RPI in the first game, 3-2. In the second game, Michigan crushed them 6-0.

Hopefully tonight is like the latter, because after that horrific defensive performance last night, we really need something like that.

RPI is not very good, but they did beat Boston College a week ago, 2-1. It's a sold out venue tonight.

Or does this team look not like a team but a collection of players just putting in their time before they get to the professional level?

I don't know if they're just really calm under pressure or if they're lackadaisical. It seems like they rarely, if ever, play desperate.

I don't know about the first part, at least with respect to this season. Certainly there have been players who haven't put forth consistent effort.

RPI didn't seem that good, so we didn't have to play our best to beat them. I felt like it was sort of looking in the mirror, when they couldn't clear the puck, and we were getting to every loose one. (Of course, then we couldn't clear the puck in a scramble, and they knocked it in.)

But yay, road win.

Was going to say pretty much the same thing...

Either they're super composed, or lack a sense of urgency.  Maybe a little of both.

They seemed to limit the odd-man rushes more as the game went on.

Werenski seems like he's just kind of chilling on D, yet still seems effective at times.  Strange.

Also based OP for posting this.

Thanks for the updates. I wish the play were more solid but I don't think we've done anything to hurt us down the road. If this team improves we could still some damage down the road but we definitely need to get better.

Much better defensively. Still, RPI is not good and they could've played better. This was a 1 goal game with under 10 left in the game.

However, avoiding PWR disaster on the road is a good thing.

Huge series up next. The toughest non-conference home series up next: Robert Morris.

7:35pm on Friday and then a 3:05 game on Saturday to compliment the Football game.

Online stream was great. Think Michigan just doesn't do this because of revenue? That is, "oh, give away hockey for free? No way!", or cost, or just haven't thought of it?

A win and a tie on the road is good. And the EZAC issue isn't as big of a deal now, so with the B1G stinking in a bad way these are important and good results. Road results are very important. I'll take it.

Took my son (8yo) for his first Michigan Hockey game and he had a blast. I had no idea he could talk so much trash...

Michigan seemed to run really hot and cold, especially on defense. At times, they seemed dominant, and then for stretches, they couldn't escape the zone. I wasn't paying enough attention to see if it was a particular line, but it was odd.

Also, RPI was really quiet, even when the game closed up. Tons of Michigan folks there tonight. I'd guess 1:8 or 1:6. It's a tiny little arena and it was a nice place to see a game.
