Michigan 4th in Director's Cup
Michigan is in 4th place in the updated Director's Cup standings. We should be closing out the winter sports strong with MBB and WBB, as well as men and women's gymnastics still to come. Go Blue!
B1G Schools:
2: Penn State
4: Michigan
9: Minnesota
16: Wisconsin
17: Michigan St.
20: Indiana
21: Ohio
31: Purdue
36: Nebraska
42: Northwestern
49: Illinois
71: Iowa
Of note: Rutgers - 92, Maryland 43.
At an alumni event in Lansing where the solar car was on display, Dave Brandon said to me "You know we should really make Solar Car a varsity sport: get some Director's Cup points"
I told him "No way we're gonna comply with the 20 hour per week requirement, thanks for the invite though."
unseat Stanford?
How many points are a National Championship worth? We know how the women fared already. We all are hoping to be playing Monday, so lets count up these points.
A national championship is worth 100 points. The loser of the championship game gets 90, and the losers on Saturday get 83.
Michigan remained at #4, they didn't move up to #4. As stated in a previous post, they were #4 at the last update and remained there this week.

But the next update would be the one that includes both Basketball teams and the Mens Swimming National Title. That is where we'd see our biggest jump and challenge Stanford.
These standings include men's swimming.
You got to be kidding me. No wonder Stanford wins this thing every year. They have 66 points from fencing.
They are not "real" swords. If they fence with broad or samurai swords then I would agree.
Wow - I didn't realize Stanford had won this 18 years in a row. Damn.
I see that we finished second in 2003-04, which is almost worthy of its own trophy ("Best Non-Stanford School").

Next week, when they add the results of men's and women's basketball, Michigan will be either first or second.
Stanford will have 749.5
Michigan will have 739 if they lose in the semis, 746 if they lose in the final, and 756 if they win the championship.
Notre Dame will have 718-735, depending on how they do in the women's final four.
Penn State will have 724.5.
North Carolina will be 5th with 674.
No matter what happens in basketball, Michigan could easily be in first place in the final winter standings with good finishes in gymnastics.
then you've got Stanford much better in the spring sports, with men's volleyball, m-w golf, w water polo, baseball. We have shots in rowing and softball. There's a reason stanford wins this thing every year.
Oh, yes; I'm not even considering the possibility that Michigan will finish first at the end of the season. Stanford should gain at least a hundred points on us in the Spring sports.
Last year, Stanford scored 418.5 points in the spring sports and Michigan scored 320.5 points in the spring sports. Two years ago, Stanford scored 501.75 points in the spring sports and Michigan scored 227.75. Barring several unexpected results, there is almost no way Michigan could keep up with Stanford in the spring.
I don't think this needs a new thread, but Capital One Cup has now updated to include basketball. Michigan is now #5 in men's, but fell out of the top 10 in women's to #14.
