meta: freep print filter is no more/performance

Submitted by Brian on

Good news: I found a module that does almost everything I want as far as the board. I'm working on getting in shape for a deployment somewhat soon. It's a lot like slashdot.

In the process I wanted to check its performance to make sure it wasn't crippling or anything and discovered a module I was using (custom filter for drupalnerds) was an insane performance drag. So I turned it off.

Upshot:

Approx 35% reduction in queries (helps site stay up in high traffic times)
Approx 35% reduction in pageload times on pages with a reasonable number of comments
The filter that turned Freep links into print links is dead
So is the filter that automatically turned youtube links into popups.

Hilariously, the Freep slapped ads on its print pages a while back so the Freep filter was pointless anyway. The Youtube filter was mostly a convenience for me on UFRs.

It certainly could but as Brian mentioned, there are ads on the print links now, so it's not like you're sticking it to the man by going to a print link, and you have to deal with the annoying print dialog box every time you open one.

If people really want it I can throw it in there just 'cause.

Sorry, but no. That would require my code, which is run after the page has completely loaded, to be able to access the super secret MGoServers to figure out which posts you've seen before. Chrome extensions don't have that level of access, and that's probably a good thing.

I don't know what module Brian was using but I'm sure it would be easy to add the functionality back in at a later date.  Example, I use this module on my site: http://drupal.org/project/lightbox2

With 87k websites using it, I can't imagine it would cause the performance hit described above.

Edit: Just noticed he mentioned the module: http://drupal.org/project/customfilter - there are definitely better ways to do a popup.

I don't even bother.  There is nothing of interest for me there.  There is nothing that makes me want to click onto any of their "news."  I've sorta gone from active boycotter to consumer who "voted with his feet" due to quality issues.

Surprising how little "news" modern-day print papers actually contain.  And then their websites are just re-hashes of someone elses info/site/story.  Very little in the way of useful info that I would click on a link.
