and, you know, the autonomy of the AD was well established by the time Brandon came into the fold and MSC's actual personal interest in the goings on there were low. She is guilty of finding an AD she had a rapport with and staying loyal to him when shit she didn't really understand started hitting the fan. She's running a massive research institution, three large university campuses, a large regional health center, etc. Do you honestly expect that she gives any shits about you having to pay for water inside a football stadium? Because the really awful shit with Brandon happened after her time.

So I know I'm a day late to this thread, but just jumping in for 2 things:

1.  Surprised no one mentioned the time when Nebraska lost its AAU status (2011) and was not supported by Wisconsin or Michigan (MSC) in its attempt.

This was a big deal in the days of conference realignment and many speculated that Nebraska would've been a much tougher add to the conference if they had lost status before signing the agreement to join the Big 10.  Apparently research so is important to University Presidents that it's a material factor in deciding who is in your athletics conference.

2. I understand the Brandon hate flowing up to MSC, especially following the characterization in JUB's book.  But many of the comments here really bring to mind the movie Friday Night Lights where the radio listener calls in to proclaim "there's too much learning going on in that school" following a loss in football.

There is a lot more to running a University than the Athletics Department and raising money.  Like you know, actually operating the school, hiring good people to run the different colleges, etc.  The things that protect the value and reputation of the diploma that we alumni have received and that students are currently earning with hard work and paying for with no small sum of money.

it was the pills, maybe mixed with a little wine.

While I think she did an OK job taking care of the school's finances during the financial crisis, I blame her (and Martin) for not hiring Miles.  That was a mortal sin.  Not forvgivable.

how toxic Brandon was.  An mlive link to minor news is all discussion about her hiring a bad AD, and seems entirely appropriate to me.  MSC's part in hiring that...guy...is enough to put a shadow on her whole presidency!  And I'm not even sure that that's hyperbole.  I still haven't read "Brandon's Lasting Lessons" because I know how depressing it will be.  I had no opinion on MSC before other than assuming she was a good president as UM continued to be a great academic institution, but athletics have always been important, and to drop the ball (HA!) so badly with him really is a major mistake on her part and causes me to wonder how good a president she really was...which is likely totally unrealistic on my part, especially with no evidence showing otherwise that I'm aware of (nor have I looked for, WHO NEEDS EVIDENCE?!)....But I like the new guy!
