John Beilein Appreciation Thread:

Submitted by FatGuyTouchdown on

Reflecting after the game tonight, I realized we've come to about the year mark since the #FIREBEILEIN crown was at its loudest and most vocal. About a year ago today was the Maverick Morgan game, and 50 weeks ago was the Ohio State loss that dropped Michigan to 14-9 and on the outside looking in on the NCAA Tourney. Since then:

Michigan is 28-7, which includes a sweet 16 berth, A Big Ten Tournament Championship following a plane crash, two straight wins over favored Michigan State squads, a top ranked recruiting class, another NBA first round draft pick, and 4 of the 7 losses came by 2 points or less. Even though I was never firmly on the fire Beilein bandwagon, I was very frustrated with the direction of the program, and I'm embarrassed to have ever felt that way. So even though I got a little too drunk tonight, I would like to thank John Beilein for always representing this program with absolute class, being a phenomenal coach and human being, and getting the absolute most out of every single one of his players. Just wanted to reflect on the last year, and how far the program has come. Go Blue!

Coach Beilein is a fantastic representative of our school, a magnificent coach and teacher, and a really good man.

Michigan basketball under him has been successful, really fun to watch, and squeaky clean in a sport and era that's mostly the opposite.

After a long period of shame, sanction and sucking, he's brought us back to consistent tournament appearances and some really magical runs.

I really can't understand why anyone wouldn't be satisfied with that.

Michigan has never been "elite" in basketball; we have one national championship. Many of our best years are marred by scandal and cheating (and there were lots of rumors of cheating throughout the Frieder years).

At our best, we've been a very good program that occasionally rises to the very top.. That's what we have with Coach Beilein - and he does it with impeccable class and unimpeachable ethics.

IMO he is the best hoops coach we've ever had, and one of the best coaches, period.

Fan is short for fanatic. Fans are inherently irrational about their teams, especially when it comes to underperforming. Tom Landry was coach of the Cowboys for 28 years and is widely thought of as one of the best coaches in NFL history. But he started 0-11-1 in his first season and didn’t have a .500 record until his 6th season. Ownership gave him a 10-year extension after year 5 with a record of 18-46. There is no chance he’d see year 4 in today’s sports environment. Fans underestimate the importance of continuity for team success. JB is a very stable force for the basketball team and produces good teams. Will they win championships? We’ll find out. Also, what a brilliant move by ownership to buy low on a future HOF coach. We should extend Jim Harbaugh and JB for 10 years now and make it clear there will be stability in Ann Arbor for the foreseeable future.

heck of a coach. but dang, why not take Z out of the game late? let MARR bring the ball up. makes no sense to have 2 50% FT guys in late. should have cost M the game last night.

Beilein's teams always improve over the season. When we don't look good at the beginning of the season I no longer worry like I did in the past, because by mid/late january or early February Beilein always has the team playing well or at least starting to click well. He truly is a great coach.

I am amazed that Beilein, an older gentleman, can find ways to connect with 19-22 y/o kids. He is the ultimate teacher, and from an outsider's perspective it seems like he has complete trust from his guys. Can't imagine what else you would want in a coach.

...well, i do anyway.

if having john beilein means:

  • we don't have one-and-dones,
  • we rarely go into a season getting chatted up as a national championship contender but can always see a sweet 16 run based on the talent level and the system in place,
  • that most players will leave the program better than when they arrived, and
  • we never (ever, ever ever) have a sniff of impropriety around the program,

then i'm all in.  100%

there's literally no ooach i'd rather have.  period.

I hope he wins a title here before his time is done. There's not one coach in America that deserves to win one more than he does. Does everything the right way, and you'll never have to worry about NCAA Compliance officials coming within 500 miles of Crisler.

With any luck, this top-10 class he's bringing in next year will be the catalyst for making that happen. We've seen what Beilein-coached teams can do when they have blue-chip talent on their rosters.

I do a lot more lurking than posting, but this thread compels me to vent.  If you haven't appreaciated Coach Beilein the entire time he's been here, your values are misplaced.  He's the most ethical and respected coach in the game, he builds exciting teams out of what he has, his players represent our school at least as well as any other group of 15 typical students (and in most cases, better), and if I had an athletic son capable of playing for anyone in the NCAA, there would be no one else I would want him to play for.  If you want to reject all that because you don't think he wins enough, you need to look in a mirror.

The same can be said about Harbaugh, too.  We are blessed to have two coaches in our most visible sports who care so much about the core mission of our school and the students under their care.  Everything else is just playing games.

Lost in the shuffle might be the ability to find quality assistant coaches.  After having 2 assistants get head coaching gigs, Hayes and Yaklich seem to be fitting in perfectly.

I am very pleased with JB, and was firmly sticking by him last year when things were looking bad.  At some point the coaches prepare the players and its up to them to execute that finally happened with last years team, but if it hadnt should we be upset with the coaches?  I dont think so at least not at that point, question the recruiting of that individual in the first place maybe.  But as you can see someone like Derrick Walton who had that in him all along, who knows if or when it will come out?

Also related topic on something i would like to post a thread to but cant:  The board we see in the lockerroom before games.  I see that it usually has all the other players, who is gaurding who, but then there are a series of '2' and or '2+'  does this have something to do with how they shoot, anybody know the details of JBs pregame board?
