M Basketball: Got win number 101 all-time against little brother, winning 77-68.

M Lacrosse: Won season opener vs Cleveland State 16-9 at home

#17 Softball: Demolished non-conference rival #7 Florida in a run rule shortened game by a score of 11-2. Swept the doubleheader on the day by beating tournament USF 2-1 in extra innings.

#13 M Tennis: Easily disposed of Cornell on the road to extend win streak to 7-1 setting up a big Top-15 dual tomorrow at #9 Columbia

Hockey: Beat Wisconsin at Yost 5-3 to sweep the series, win the season series vs Wisconsin 3-1. Now 6-1-1 since the calendar changed to 2020

#3 M Gymnastics: Picked up 2 wins over UIC and the Northern Illinois Club at home but the story was the team score of 413.400. That's the second highest score anyone has put up nationally this season. Michigan is now 9-0.

PS: Don't remember there being a post, but Men's Gym beat OSU last week at their house even with some uncustomary falls. Both teams are usually highly ranked nationally, and we've got some amazing youngsters making up for the high-skill guys who've graduated.  Yesterday's meet (and score posted by WD) showed that progress.

don't get me wrong, it's best case scenario, but UF lost their top P (and probably the best P in softball the last 2 -3 years) and they are obviously searching for someone to step up in the circle - they threw 3-4 P agasint M alone and have used everyone on their staff here opening weekend.

UF is a good team, but I wouldn't bet on tehm to win the SEC this year

No, college hockey does not use the NHL's strange format for records.

6 wins, 1 loss, 1 tie. Even though we won the 3v3 2OT period against PSU it is not recognized by the NCAA as anything but a tie if the game goes beyond the 5 minute regulation OT period.

Every conference has its own rules, too. Some just have games end a tie and everyone goes home after the 5 minute OT and it's called a tie in the arena and in the record book.

The B1G doesn't do that nor did the CCHA. Officially the game ends in a tie after the first OT but after B1G games a 2OT that is 3-on-3 is played for 5 minutes to determine who gets the extra point in the conference standings. If it's still tied after the 2OT, then a sudden death shootout happens. Not a regular shootout with rounds, if any team scores they win instantly.

Absolutely ridiculous that the NCAA hasn't standardized something. The B1G also sucks from going away from the regular shootout and adding this convoluted circus.

The NCAA has standardized the 5-minute OT followed by a tie. What they have permitted is for conferences to supplement the standardized system with something that those conferences believe will increase fan interest.

This, of course, makes things a bit confusing for fans trying to discern records, but there are really only two important data points: Conference points, which determines seeding for the conference tournament that offers an automatic tournament bid to the winner, and the pairwise ratings. Absolutely nothing else matters.

*I do actually prefer ties in college hockey--the two-game-series format in most conferences means that even though a tie seems unsatisfying, it combines with the other result in the weekend to paint a larger picture. Michigan "took three points" at Penn State two weeks ago, and that's a great result on the road, even though it is clouded with some other results that seem less important.

Yeah this certainly beats the Saturday last year in March when every Michigan team that played that day lost. Seems like the loss to Florida in softball had unfortunately become an annual event. Certainly nice to see the softball team flip the script.

Hopefully the basketball recruits that were on campus enjoyed themselves, if any of them commit at some point we should go back and add another point onto yesterday's tally sheet.

Wrestling lost a dual meet to #1 Iowa at home, but the good news is that Mason Parris, our #2 nationally ranked heavyweight wrestler, continued his undefeated season by pinning the #3 ranked heavyweight from Iowa. The Iowa guy he beat was undefeated prior to this match and many thought Mason was the underdog despite being the higher ranked guy. Mason has improved a ton since last season and has a great chance at a national title this year.

As was noted in the Lacrosse preview by Mr. Dookmarriot it’s ridiculous to be playing on Feb 8 in snow flurries and temps in the mid 20’s. If it weren’t for the basketball game I would have been shoveling snow on the concourse for the 60 people who braved the conditions. Adjust the schedule lax powers that be!!

First time at Yost yesterday. What a fun environment. I’ve always heard it’s the best environment in all of Michigan sports and I came away thinking it’d be hard to top it.
