Clarity — Martelli has been acting head coach with Juwan Howard out due to his surgery. Howard will start his transition back into the head coach role, beginning with being designated as an assistant coach until he is entirely good to go as head coach. Martelli still acting HC.

As a former HS bball ref, I can understand how the zeebs working the Texas Tech game became peeved with Coach Howard. I've had situations where head coaches were letting an assistant do the in-game coaching. But they can't help it & stand up to bark at my crew. There can only be 1 head coach standing & talking to the refs during live game action. Still doesn't really explain the double T's at halftime, but I can understand how they would have doled out one T. Should always come with a warning before the T...no question.

Thank you - finally someone else saw the same thing I was seeing - it was extremely awkward to see all the confusion on the Michigan bench with all the people standing and barking orders/talking to officials etc - imagine how confused the players must have been - my guess is this became a big internal issue within the team hence the reason this official announcement came out. Kudos to the athletics department for clarifying all of this. I love Juwan but he is struggling.

Howard has privilege issues (not anger or Anger issues - there's A difference) and he is not allowed in the Anger clubhouse until he acts out of turn... again. He is straight up coaching here.

The concept of HCs having a different standard of behavior than assistants makes me Angry. That is privilege for sure.

Just working my issues here.

This really feeds into that old rumor that Martelli was the real mastermind behind Howard’s early success. In all seriousness I hope he progresses and heals up. This team is fickle and has high peaks and low valleys: if they can play consistent they are a tournament team.

Found this alarming at first. But seems to mean that Juwan is not ready to resume HC duties just yet. Hope that it isn't awkward for the two men, both of whom I wish well.

BTW, no one who follows closely--or who read Dylan's careful post-game analyses the last few seasons--thought that Martelli was the 'mastermind' of the team. It's a shame that with the likes of RCMB peddling such corrosive garbage that people here picked it up.

i think i heard that juwan's heart surgery was pretty significant - as evident by his long time departure.  something to do with an aortic issue.  glad he is getting better, but don't rush it.

Juwan being on the bench just strikes me as a bad idea. Either he's good to go or he's not. It's no problem if he's not; let him take as much time as he needs and return as HC when he's back at full strength. The program is in capable hands with Martelli at the helm. But this weird situation where Juwan has temporarily demoted himself to assistant coach but is lurking behind Martelli and sporadically re-asserting himself just creates confusion and distractions (as evidenced by his ejection during the Texas Tech game).
