Greenstein: B1G to release COVID Rules
https://twitter.com/TeddyGreenstein/status/1319376405579300865?s=20
#B1G about to release COVID info: If team pos rate >5% and team "population" rate >7.5%, game will be declared No Contest and will not count as W or L for either team.
---
It's unclear to me right now what a team "population" rate is, potentially players who were exposed but haven't yet tested positive?
Either way, have to assume we'll see a few "No Contest" results in the conference this season, and given the 21 day rule they've already established, it could get ugly quick.
I'm just hoping given rumblings about Minnesota's roster that they're not so bad that we need to wait yet another week to see our boys take the field.

That’s the dumbest rule. So if 80/85 players test negative, they cancel the game? Wow so our game against minny is prolly gonna get cancelled then. Great fuck you fleck and Minnesota

That's one way to look at it. Another is, hey -- at least we will HAVE (some sort of) a season. It wasn't all that long ago that it was decided to completely cancel it.
Relax. Go with the flow.

Avatar checks out.

In the ACC and Big12 you sit out 10 days if you test positive and the SEC is 14 days, yet the B1G is 21 days?

I wish last year's Ohio State game had been declared a No Contest before kick-off and we both went our separate ways, vs it being one in fact.

Honestly - it could be worse. It's at least not a "zero tolerance" policy. Games have been cancelled elsewhere because of just ONE positive case.

I’m sure they’d have to include walk-ons and possibly even staff in that figure. Doesn’t really make sense for the percentage of positive tests to only apply to the 85 players on scholarship.

Actually it’s a sound rule that’s totally in line with standard Covid protocols. If 5 players have it, they could have infected 25 more.

Agreed. I’m in my Missouri office this week and am counting down the minutes till 4 tomorrow when I can head for home. I’m actually excited about the shitty 6hr drive because I can listen to the wiscy game on the way home.

6 hours from MO. I'm guessing you're heading North. Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison?

Nw Ohio. I gotta thank my family for that one. Moved from flat rock to Ohio when I was a kid and I’ve been stuck ever since!

I'd like to know who is responsible for executing the tests and reporting the results. I don't exactly trust ... ahem ... some teams to remain transparent (and free from the temptation to fudge data) if the truth runs counter to the best interests of their football. So, I'd like to hear that Big Ten reps are taking this over, or some university party with unimpeachable character that is also insulated from sports cares/influence (a hospital department chair who is not a booster ... or something).

It should be medical teams from the other division that don’t play each other and aren’t rivals. Michigan watches Iowa, Iowa watches OSU, OSU covers Minnesota, etc, etc.
Medical teams separated from their own campuses would probably be as trustworthy as we could hope for right now.

Do we know where/when these numbers are being released?
October 22nd, 2020 at 5:45 PM ^
Are the 5% and 7% numbers out of 125 players?

Small complaint, OP: Greenstein is an ass. I'd prefer a fungible source in instances like these.
October 22nd, 2020 at 6:25 PM ^
For the sake of making the team "population" rate, I'll gladly re-enroll as a walk-on.

This will be interesting, all starts tomorrow night

Just in time when the Midwest is the worst COVID-19 hotspot in the nation.

Here is what the Big Ten released back when they reinstated the season:
The Big Ten Conference will use data provided by each Chief Infection Officer (CInO) to make decisions about the continuation of practice and competition, as determined by Test Positivity Rate and Population Positivity Rate, based on a seven-day rolling average:
- Test positivity rate (number of positive tests divided by total number of tests administered):
- Green 0-2%
- Orange 2-5%
- Red >5%
- Population positivity rate (number of positive individuals divided by total population at risk):
- Green 0-3.5%
- Orange 3.5-7.5%
- Red >7.5%
Decisions to alter or halt practice and competition will be based on the following scenarios:
- Green/Green and Green/Orange: Team continues with normal practice and competition.
- Orange/Orange and Orange/Red: Team must proceed with caution and enhance COVID-19 prevention (alter practice and meeting schedule, consider viability of continuing with scheduled competition).
- Red/Red: Team must stop regular practice and competition for a minimum of seven days and reassess metrics until improved.
The daily testing will begin by September 30, 2020.

This makes less sense than Leaders and Legends.
October 22nd, 2020 at 9:45 PM ^
The concept makes sense on face value; I'll wait to see policy and confirmed numbers (or info from a reporter I trust) before I'm ready to argue about it.
But! This is football. At least one coach will game this to avoid an L.

Well if we don’t like our chances against osu, we can report a few positive tests, take the no contest and basically eliminate them from the playoffs. I would take those results this year.
