FCS Quarterfinal - Anyone heard of Mason Pline?

Submitted by mlGOBLUE on December 9th, 2023 at 12:38 AM

Was about to go to bed when I ran across this game between Montana and Furman with about 5 minutes left. Furman down a TD - pretty much every play for the last 3 drives were passes to Mason Pline - 6’7” TE from Fowler MI. He just caught the last second TD to go to overtime. Probably never UM level recruit, but looks like an FCS beast. I’ve stopped drinking, now I’m going to bed.

Definitely not your everyday guy off the street, but I agree with the OP's judgment. Probably not quite on UM's radar. Here are some humorous small-town Michigan football highlights:

Pline is a great kid, have known him for many years.

Was originally a hoops prospect in HS. From a small town in the Lansing area.

Vouched hard for him as a low-major D1 caliber prospect. Eventually received an offer from Air Force, but wanted to stay closer to home and opted for Ferris State.

Was eventually convinced to go the FB route and it’s worked out for him.

Mason was the quintessential tweener in BB - not quite big enough to be a D1 big, but not quite agile enough to be a D1 wing. Good, but not great shooter as well.

Can’t really speak intelligently as to his FB projection, but I’d assume the athletic limitations may have been applicable there as well.

He played football at Ferris State used his graduate year to go to Furman..  I think there are 2 or 3 Pline siblings or cousins around and each had a hand in succesful Fowler sports programs.
