ESPN.com finally changes Michigan logo
So, essentially here's the story. Having read posts by both MGoShoe and Section 1 that related that Mr. Brandon was pushing Michigan toward the Block M as the primary logo mark for Michigan, I sent, over the course of six months, several emails to ESPN.com customer care telling them that they had the wrong logo for Michigan on their site. The first couple were ignored, but thanks to some help from the MGoTwitterati and some links to the official Michigan site, ESPN.com has finally switched the Michigan logo on the site to the Block M.
What had been is now..
This logo, while not the traditional Maize logo, does closely resemble the center court logo at Crisler. I know that the maize Block M, even with the blue border, would be very hard to see on a white background site, but this is a good luck. It will look very nice on ESPN.com
Now to make SI.com change their logo:
think that they should use BlockM's avatar creature as our logo
/s
Insectosaurus!
Sounds good to me, as long as I get some sort of royalty out of the deal.
I prefer the previous logo.
Of course you do, Mr. Cursive Writing Guy... ;-)
I'm happy they're changing the logo. The old one looks too much like something that would be found on a Starter jacket in the year 1994.
I prefer the inside to be maize with a blue border, though.
Agreed. Though this is better than the previous, and life's all about compromises.
Concur, but I think that looking at ESPN.com's logos on the site, they really try to avoid any yellow on a white background wherever possible. This seems like a win.
Logo is circa 1984 but you nailed the Starter jacket idea.

Maize with blue border, just like my tat.
Perfer the previous logo? C'MON Son! I saw this also today when I was on ESPN.com, glad to see the change.
Good ole' Ghostface, glad you liked it haha
i mean as long as its a blue and maize "M" what makes the difference?? im on UM's Espn page literally everyday and have never really paid the logo any attention
Can anyone point to a hi res version of this Blue 'M' with yellow trim? Would love to have a copy for the wallpaper. Thx.

That's the official university site with all the different logos and the official rules of use for each. Each logo is given in three or four different formats. I used it when designing t-shirts for the sailing team this year, and it was very helpful. Find one you like and go with it.
...but that seems to be a members only site. Not able to access downloads; only the style guide. Am I missing the proper link? Thank you!
I had no problem when I clicked on it...
EDIT: It required a level-1 password, which is given to anyone associated with the University (students, employees, etc)
I see, I didn't even realize you needed to log in to see it, since I was already logged in. I don't know where to look, then, if you don't have a uniqname/friend account.
I just clicked on it and it looks like they did change it over to the new Block M.
I'm also glad they changed it over. The "split M" just never looked right to me.
Wierd. Maybe something to do with using Internet Explorer, but when I click on the link I see a split block M.
Double Wierd. If I navigate to the same address on my android phone I see the new Block M.
Cookies, and cache.
On the MIchigan Football Homepage the recruit rankings are showing up on the bottom right. Richardson and RJS are 81s and Biggs, Bolden and Funchess are 80s, that's all I can see at least.
Edit: nevermind beaten to it by like 5 days
why do some people attest the split m so much?
Because you touch yourself at night.
I actually did not detest the Split M, when it was the 1990s version:
but when it moved to this version:
I began to like it less and less. Plus, the Block M, in a small rendering, looks so much better than the split M. Plus, the Block M is the center logo at Michigan Stadium, Crisler, and Yost.
I got nothin'.
top one looks a lot better
Proof of the gradual move from maize to yellow to.... adidas highlighter
The one on the bottom is much closer to "maize" than the one on the top. The one on the top is the awful gold color they used in the '70s. Maize is a bright yellow.
According to Wikipedia:
In public usage, maize can be applied to a variety of shades, ranging from light yellow to a dark shade that borders on orange, since the color of maize may vary.
This corn looks more like the upper logo.
But the HTML color for maize is more like the lower one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maize_(color)
maize may be highlighter yellow in your mind, but in nature corn comes in many shades of yellow (not to mention reds and purples.) the official shades appear to be more of the "gold" color as opposed to "highlighter", but the official shades vary within the university. For example, the athletic blue is brighter than the business school blue and the health system yellow is more gold than other parts of the university. check out: http://www.logos.umich.edu/print.html
FWIW I think Brian got the colors about right.
Please read this article--
http://michigantoday.umich.edu/96/Fall96/mta13f96.html
And see the swatches in the bottom photograph that read "1912 colors that U-M now recognizes as official." Note how much better those look than the Iowa-style gold color that the athletic department used in the 1970s.
Michigan's maize is not gold, period. It is bright yellow.
Simply because the font is more modern and the maize in the upper logo is more 'golden' (think Cal)
I've always hated the 90's block M. I mean, isn't writing 'MICHIGAN' across a maize and blue block M redundant?!
is that the solid M is a much better logo for merch. I would MUCH rather wear that than the Split M.
please please please no "script Michigan" on the back of the new scoreboards the Big House - Block M only!
And the new "Hello" posts need to ditch the script Michigan logo in the bottom right corner if possible - thanks.
GO BLUE!
Still not compliant
Great news. A grateful "thank you" to any Mgoreaders who helped make this happen.
As far as branding goes, Dave Brandon is smart for doing away with the old logo that has the name written on it.
Dave Brandon doesn't really have anything to do with it. The solid M is the official logo of the entire University, and use of the "Split M" is "discouraged". I'm pretty sure that decision was made pre-Brandon. See the link provided by Sambojangles above and more specifically here: http://www.logos.umich.edu/usemarks.html
I like the blue one a little better than the maize one, anyway. Blue is (or used to be) sort of our primary color.
That being said, I can understand why we've used the scripted "Michigan'' logo in sports.
This is mainly to prevent confusion for people who may not be very familiar with the college football teams (non Americans).
I don't blame ESPN for being confused.

I always liked the university seal and wolverine silhouette. classic
Unless you live in Kansas City and everyone walks up to you and says "how about those Tigers?"
The "V" of the Michigan block M does not make contact with the lower two horizontal lines.
if the umbutu tribe of southern Namibia knows the block M is Michigan, I'll trade that kind of recognition for some yokels in Missouri.
