DJ Durkin Appreciation Thread

Submitted by LJ on

There are some pretty immature, pathetic comments trashing Durkin in the threads below this one.  You guys should be ashamed.  Neg away, but I'd rather appreciate Durkin for helping turn this defense into one of the country's best.  God forbid he leave for a raise and a promotion somewhere else (and god forbid he offers some of our other staffers raises and promotions as well).

You wanted a good program?  This is what you get.  This is how you build a coaching tree.  Every other DC candidate takes notice that after good work under Harbaugh, your career is in good shape.

Thanks, Coach Durkin.  It was a great year, and we appreciate your work.

There definitely has not been enough written on this topic, so I'll add my two cents:

1) I am not especially mad at Durkin's decision because coaching, like anything else, is a business. If you have a better opportunity you probably take it. And you can't always determine the timing--many people are blaming him for interviewing during OSU week, but Maryland may not have been willing to wait. And if he *was* thinking of taking the position (if offered), I'm sure he also wanted to get things done as quickly as possible. It may kind of suck for us, but that' how it goes.

2) I am intrigued by the speculation that this is causing/has caused a major rift with Harbaugh. Harbaugh has made clear on many occasions that he does NOT discuss other jobs during the season--remember he recently told a reporter that it was "disrespectful to the game" or something like that. And last year, from my understanding, he wouldn't make anything official until the end of the Niners season--and he was very reluctant to talk AT ALL about his coaching future. So I could imagine that is very unhappy with Durkin's approach.

That's it--now that I've added this comment, we can end the discussion of Durkin and move on to a fresh topic--something like the rules for choosing which teams play in the Citrus Bowl.

Agreed, but talking about the job in "Public" (i.e. with reporters at a press conference, for news and media), and talking about the job in "Private", with ADs and your current employer and potential employers.

Are two totally different things.

Better job? At a school where 75% of their students don't even know they have football?

Durkin was trending nationally when the news broke this afternoon. It was neither trending in Baltimore nor Washington, D.C.

Cleaning shitters at Rick's is a better job than anything Maryland football-related. At least it's in a city that cares about football.

And there ain't no college town better than Ann Arbor.

So instead of getting better here and getting a REAL P5 job like Kirby Smart just got at Georgia, he jumped at the first opportunity to bolt.

The water isn't always bluer in the other sea. He's gonna learn that when he gets punked by the rest of the East division (minus RUTGERZ) yearly.

Kirby Smart ran top defenses at Bama for almost a DECADE before he got that job.  I don't blame Durkin for wanting to go a little sooner.  Who knows if his stock will ever be this high again.

I agree that it'll be a tough place to win.  But I don't see how you can blame the guy for taking it.

Okay, but you know nothing about the circumstances.  Maybe Harbuagh said "Yeah, DJ, go for it, do the interview"  Maybe he did a skype interview during lunch.  It is even confirmed that he interviewed last week?  They were interviewing Monday.  Who knows?

no...I said you don't know shit about the student body...a large proportion of people are international and many, many others would rather study...

And it doesn't take a genius to find out if I went to UM...and what degrees I recieved ass

Asks the virgin who should have a much easier time getting ass at gvsu or wherever he goes, but instead chooses to give anyone on a blog a hard time about things he disagrees with especially about a student body at a school he never went to... Interesting...

I'm not a Sparty troll you dumbass. I actually went to UM and have been a fan my whole life. Congrats on the Photoshop. How about you watermark shit on the internet next time? Maybe you can show that off to the next chick wanna date in your depressing life instead of projecting your insecurities on an online blog lol.

Why are you guys being such assholes? Anyone can be a Michigan fan. Clearly, WD has dedicated himself to UM athletics as a whole more than anyone on this board. It seems you're just insecure, are using your degrees as a mask for your lack of self esteem. You are demonstrating sparty mentality.

I have a group on here very close to my heart that follow me around at virtually every post and lay in the weeds waiting to jump out so they can take their potshot.

So much so that they even neg Hello posts and actual news, not just my clunker threads (I've had my share).

I admire the devotion. Seriously do, not even being sarcastic. That takes a lot of tabs to track my posts.

Nobody, and I mean NOBODY follows you around, or keeps tabs on your posts. You have some serious delusions of grandeur, and are a total narcissist.

People read the board. You post on the board a lot. It's hard not to read your comments, many of which are completetly inane. People neg you, and call you out because of your total lack of perspective. You give yourself a whole lot of credit.

I don't think anyone actually seeks him out, but he does have a few guys who seem to neg everything he says. I don't see as many personal shots at WD as there used to be by posters like Moe and Cali Wolverine or something like that.

Having said that, WD's gotten way more annoying. Not sure what the deal is. Used to like most of his posts, but now he seems so self-righteous and bitchy most of the time.

Anyone can be a Michigan fan, absolutely. Talking shit about other colleges and their student bodies when you're NOT a Michigan alum or former student, though, is just inane and worthy of derision. At that point you're not being a Michigan football fan, you're being a university groupie.

Doesn't know it exists? No, but then your Maryland claim was also a gross exaggeration.

Doesn't give a shit about it? It's a higher proportion than I think you realize... I'd say the majority of my college friends think football is more bread and circuses than a major part of their M experience.

A surprising amount of students at Michigan don't care about football either. A lot of international students could give a damn about football. Plus even a lot of domestic students come to study and hate sports, some just get really drunk when they're not studying. With classes, exams, clubs, Greek life, etc football is on the back burner of most students' daily lives until Saturday shows up so I don't get why that matters with Maryland. Who wouldn't take a promotion for cleaning shitters at Ricks to being a bouncer at Skeep? You're delusional

Durkin wasn't "cleaning shitters".  He accepted an elite position at, an elite school, and treated it like any other "stepping stone" job so apparently money is ALL that matters to him.  Instead of concentrating on prepping for OSU, he concentrated on lining up his next gig.  As people have said, good for him if that's all that matters.  For having so little integrity, we are well rid of him.

Also, I'm not convinced he worked magic here, after Glasgow was out, after IU, teams knew exactly how to dismantle our D.
