CCHA Tournament Quarterfinal Matchups Now Set

Submitted by hockeyguy9125 on

With Bowling Green's epic double overtime (!) shocker over Northern Michigan the Second Round matchups are set for the CCHA Tournament. It sounded like an epic game from the BGSU radio viewpoint.

The matchups are (Best of Three Series March 11-13th):

#1 Michigan hosts #11 Bowling Green in Ann Arbor

#2 Notre Dame hosts #8 Lake Superior State in South Bend

#3 Miami hosts #7 Alaska in Oxford

#4 Western Michigan hosts #5 Ferris State in Kalamazoo.

The four winners will advance to the CCHA Semifinals at Joe Louis Arena the following weekend. The teams that advance will be reseeded.
Check MFan_in_Ohio's diary for a guide on who to root for in terms of pairwise for Michigan.

This will be the last series at Yost in my student career...damn that is depressing as hell

*Side Note: Michigan Basketball Quarterfinal game against Illinois is at 2:30(ish) on Friday and if they advance, 1:40 on Saturday. These are the nights of the first two games of the CCHA Quarterfinals which will take place at 7:35 each night. All of this means that Basketball and Hockey will NOT be on at the same time. Yeah, we all got lucky here!

this may also be my last series at Yost in my student career as well. However, I am planning on staying the A2 area and becoming a regular season ticket holder.

We need to play M hockey.  One thing about BG is they have soul.  They may be a bod team, but they have soul.  I dont think I can remember a single play this year where they gave up on a play.

We should roll but we have to play the game and not get caught up in the hype.  I would not be surprised if BG sneaks one on us.

Nothing is more unpredictible than playoff hockey. My biggest fear right now is that Michigan takes this series lightly. If they do not show up and play down to BGSU's level, this could get scary. Michigan has to show up and play their game, if they play how they can, this should be an easy sweep.

As a 2010 alum, let me assure you that going to a game with friends who are still undergrads is still a pretty analogous experience, if hockey is anything like football.

It will never be quite the same, but for at least the next year or two, assuming you have some friends younger than you, the experience is more familiar than nostalgic. Enjoy your final series, and finish out the year strong!

This is true to an extent.  I made it back to a couple games in the student-section the first couple years out, and it was pretty cool - I definitely felt like I was right back at home.

The thing is, though, you're not part of the student body anymore.  You don't head down with your buddies from the dorm, you don't read the recaps in the daily, you don't space out during your Friday classes thinking about the game, etc.  Being an alumni is great and has its own riches, but it's not the same.

To the OP:  I will never forget my last weekend at Yost.  2007-2008 season, we pounded UNO 10-1 Friday, and then completed the sweep with a 2-1 win Saturday.  Go crazy, especially for the seniors like Hagelin whom you've followed all four years.  There are great things ahead in alum life, but nothing will ever be quite like the Yost student section - enjoy it while you've got it!

this has been the greatest week/weekend of sports for me in a long time

BASKETBALL
- M beat MSU in basketball. Season sweep
- M tourney hopes look great
- Just locked up the #4 seed in the BTT with PSU's win today

HOCKEY
- M hockey won the CCHA reg season title last weekend
- M hockey drew BGSU in the 2nd round
- OSU was swept. Season over
- MSU was swept. Season over. Comley's career ends on frozen tundra.
- UDel won a 2 OT game over Adrian a little while ago 5-4 after being down 4-2 with 1:30 left in the game. Scored 2 in the last minute ala BU-Miami. Maybe the best hockey game I've ever seen. They're in the ACHA Frozen Four now

- Softball is crushing people's hopes and dreams emphatically

Wish I had gone. I went to their game against Waterloo on Friday before watching some friends' game. When i left USA was up 4-0. Apparently they gave up a couple later. I wanted to watch Gibson but he was facing very few shots for the time I was there.

Took some photos. This might be the only action shot.

I do not care how bad they were all season, if Michigan takes them lightly and plays down to their level, BGSU could cause problems. I listened to the game tonight (BGSU v NMU) and BG's goalie seemed real strong. Michigan has to use their depth and secondary scoring to burn BG all series long. Also, they cannot turn the puck over in their own zone. Bad teams still can burn you if you give them too many good chances.

I think Michigan sweeps (and there is no reason to expect anything else) BG this coming weekend, but I am not sure it will be as easy as everyone thinks it will be. (Hopefully I am wrong and we can get a couple 11 goal games)

for some reason I'm not all too worried about the team getting up to play BG.  I know this isn't the team of years past and I won't use last year as a comparison, because obviously they're more likely to play well when it's do-or-die for the NCAA tournament.  But even 2008-2009, when we weren't necessarily a prototypical Red team and had probably a better shot at a one seed (which we ended up getting) than we do this year and played a then-horrible Western Michigan team, we significantly outplayed them, to the extent that Western didn't even record a single shot the first period on Saturday.

I'm not saying Michigan can't lose, they certainly can.  But I'm just not worried about the team getting up for this game.  I don't know if I remember the last time Red didn't take his team to the Joe, I don't think I remember the last time we didn't win a CCHA play-off series in two games.

Leave it to the team to talk about the ways they can lose so they don't come out too flat.  For us fans, I think it's a lot more fun to just talk about winning!

My wife has only about 3 weeks before she gives birth to our first child, so I had to give away my tickets for the Yost series this weekend in the lieu of being on labor alert.  I'll have to follow the team's playoff progress on TV this season.  I did ask my unborn child who she liked in this weekend's series and go two kicks in reply, which I took to mean, "Go Blue".

So we've got that going for us....well, that and the fact that BGSU is just whoa bad.

Here is the strange thing about Bowling Green..... They won 3 CCHA games all season, until last weekend when they won 2 out of 3. They don't score too many goals, but they don't give up too many either...

Just for fun, Michigan hasn't played BG in almost 5 months! UM swept BG in Ohio for UM's first 2 wins of the season. When UM took the ice vs. BG on Friday night, UM Football was still 5-0, Rich Rod head coach and Sparty was coming to A2 on Saturday... Hoops, well we were worried the Europe trip for hoops was a precursor of bad things to come....And it is now possible that UM Hoops could be in the BTT Semis by the time BG vs. UM drop the puck!

It was so long ago that these two teams played, it was almost LAST SEASON (it was last "year").

UM is in their time of year now, Playoff Hockey, @Yost, Swedish and Texas Flags galore...

UM sweeps.... 3-1 and 5-0.

I WANT FALCON BLOOD.

Michigan MUST pound these losers into the ground for the sweep. BIG TIME.
