Can we stop down playing this rivalry please?

Good call this morning Desmond. How many times do we need to lose to inferior MSU teams for us to take this seriously? Even most of John L's teams played us down to the wire. I'm sick of us playing down to MSU and we even looked uninspired out there. Meanwhile MSU is jacked up and played smart, ran the ball, and hung on to the ball. What is the problem here?

3 years in and our Ol and QB still suck so either we can't coach or recruit those positions. Need to fix that. As I said all last year, every play we call looks like a terrible call when the OL and QB suck.

This also shows how stupid it is to have rankings before at least 4 games into the league season.    This team was never close to being #7.    They are barely a Top 20 team - onlyu because of the defense.

Chances this year for a signature win remain against Wisconsin, Penn State and Ohio State.   I wouldn't hold my breath.

But I am sure this coming offseason we'll be treated to all kinds of wacky Harbaugh stories.  Weeee..........that sure is fun.

If we don't match Dantonio's preparation and focus for this game then this will keep happening.

We've never beat them when they had anything better than a 6 loss team since he's been coach. If they are good or even just decent, then he finds a way to beat us.

Dantonio's a great coach. Call it what it is. For this specific game of U of M vs MSU, you have to take Dantonio over whoever the U of M coach is until proven otherwise. MSU should be good next year, so you have to assume they'll beat us next year until proven otherwise and prep and prepare for this game like MSU does.

Had the chance to obliterate them last year and then Speight threw a pick and Harbaugh went to a conservative don't blow it type approach. There was nothing innovative tonight coming off of an "improvement" week. Trying to run between the tackles right into the teeth of MSU's defense was maddening and it played right into their hands. Tosses and passes on the edge we're working when it wasn't a Hurricane. Then Drevno said fuck it and dialed up 5-wide No Back from NCAA 09.

vs MSU between 1996 and 2007 and 13 out of 14 between 1970 and 1983. MSU in fact lost every game vs Michigan at Spartan Stadium between 1970 and 1987. People consider that the 'normal' for this rivalry and hence every time it looks like we're 'good' again, we feel like it will definitely return to that norm any time now.

Of course, what we sometimes forget is that Michigan went 2-10-2 vs MSU between 1956 and 1969 (and 4-14-2 between 1951 and 1969). Most people here weren't watching football then..(and neither was I), so maybe it's understandable we don't think of that much. At the time MSU had some of its glory days..legendary coaches and players..while Michigan went through several years of mixed results.

The thing is that there's no promises that the future is more like the 70s and the Carr years and less like the 50s and 60s. It's not predetermined. So I cringe every time I see people fall back into that old reflex of 'ha ha we're gonna roll MSU, we're good, they suck' (and then have the audacity after the game to moan about our team for some reason not being as into it as MSU). We mock the 'disrespect' thing but if I were an MSU fan I would most certainly feel like Michigan doesn't respect my school, my team and by extension me. Do we think that may make people willing to go that little extra step they wouldn't make vs other teams? I think it may.

Excellent post.  We killed it during the Bo years, but we also had unlimited scholarships, etc.  It's not the Big 2 and little eight, anymore.  We think it's easy and natural to go back in time and dominate.  Well, we MIGHT have to actually work for it.  MSU works for it, obviously.

Brian's preview made me want to barf when I read the little brother comments, and then Desmond had to pipe in on national TV. Neither of these made us lose the game, but two examples of how our fans, alums, and apparently our football team just don't fucking get it right now.

Except that these comments do have an effect on the outcome of the game. For as smart as the U-M fan base purports to be, it still hasn't figured out that MSU thrives off of U-M's continued disrespect of their program. Stop giving them what they want. Stop giving them what they need. Without disrespect they have nothing to fall back on. Dantonio owns it as it is currently constructed. Until the entire U-M football community -- players, coaches, and fans -- flips the script and starts approaching this game with an underdog mindset, nothing is changing in this rivalry.

It honestly feels like Dantonio and his staff outworked Harbaugh and his staff for this game. Dantonio wants it a lot more and preps and prepares for this game better than Harbaugh did. In terms of prep time, I don't think it was even close and Dantonio does this every year with zero accountability or hint of change on U of M's side.

It's a sports fan forum..on which you appear to be a long-term member with many posts. But sports as a spectator thing is all about the performance of young men (a bit older but still young in the pros) making an impact on people younger, older and around the same age as themselves. If you have a fundamental philosophical issue with that premise..I don't think a sports fan (fan as in from fanatic) forum is the right place to spend your time on.

I'm only mentioning how amazing the "Fan's" perspective of the team can change in one game. I mean, do people REALLY think MSU is the team UM wants to be? I personally don't want to be a team that scores 14 points when they are +5 in the turnover column. If Michigan forced 5 turnovers and won by 4, that's a performance that feels even worse than the one we actually saw last night.

As a fan, I will continue to downplay it as it is “eh” when you win and sucks when you lose. Doesn’t give you the joy of winning a rivalry game like ohio state does. But being on the TEAM, you gotta be WAY more prepared and pumped up for the game. They should’ve known very clearly that Dantonio was gonna throw everything at us, yet even with an improvement week, we weren’t prepared.

I sure hope we as fans taking it more seriously translates to more wins moving forward. I’m committed to the cause. This is the second time in two years I’ve flown across the country to watch us lose to them. It’s getting old.

I mean, it's honestly not really a rivalry. The only reasons I hate losing to them are: 1. losing sucks and 2. all the bandwagon fucking MSU fans are suddenly out in force on Facebook and at work.

It's incredibly annoying to lose to them, because suddenly everyone's trumpeting about how great MSU is, and how scUM sucks, like they're not a marginally-ranked academic institution. It's not even particularly rewarding to beat them, just a relief that I don't have to deal with their mouth-breathing fans for another year.

We do have to take it more seriously. This is there Super Bowl every year and to put them firmly back in there place we need to pick it up a bit. This was a shitty performance coming off a bye week. Did not see the improvement at all with5 turnovers and shit. Also, I wish you Tyronne Wheatley was still coaching our backs, seems like fumbleitis has gone parabolic with Jay Harbaugh coaching the backs. Completely sucks.

Call me crazy but for 45 minutes of last year's game, Michigan looked like it turned the corner on downplaying the MSU game.  We played hard and looked like we actually gave a shit.  We unleashed our decided talent advantage and took it to the green and white like we SHOULD!  Then in the fourth quarter we got complacent and let MSU back into the game to make the final score look respectable.  That bullshit carried over into this game.  This year's game looked like, again, we really don't respect them or put the effort that we should into this game.  Coaches (mostly) down to the players need to do a lot of reflection and re-think how they approach this game.  Complete and utter bullshit.  Start playing the MSU game like you really give a shit, for fucks sakes!

To make things worse.... I'm on facebook and guess what's trending right now. "Western Michigan vs Michigan State. Michigan State breaks the Big House's heart again."

Western Michigan?! Really...

We Michigan fans better come to the conclusion, that Harbaugh is nowhere near the coaching "God", that many think he is. This team is bad, and that falls squarely on Harbaugh! Stop with the excuses, people!!!
