Bo Ryan to retire after 2015-2016 season
"Retire" or return to sleep until he's hungry again.
He has acquired all the information necessary to return to Rigel to inform the bug people of our weaknesses.

And basketball watching people everywhere rejoice.
Make fun of his system all you want, but last year's team was crazy fun to watch.
Ryan sped it up since he knew he had the talent unlike the years before where vintage boring ball would be the only way they win with subpar talent.
Ryan retiring makes the B10 weaker. That is a fact. I wonder if Wisky will take Ryan's recommendation and hire the asistant or hire outside.
I would think they would throw a crap ton of cash at Bennett from UVA due to his ties to UW.
He knocked off scumbag Calapari and KY from an undefeated season. We would have never heard the end of the slurpfest.
For that, i will always be greatful.
I wouldn't be surprised if Bennett holds out for one of the really big jobs. He would be a top candidate at any school, and Wisconsin isn't going to pay him more/provide more opportunities than UVA already does. Maybe the previous connections will win out, though.
THANK the HEAVENS!
He's been a great coach there, good on him for hanging it up when he feels ready. Interesting to see if they can hire someone to keep the consistency of that program going, it won't be easy.
a coach retire when he's at the top of his success instead of lingering on way too long and letting the program decline into the dumpster. I've never believed that past success and longevity should give someone a free ticket for holding the head coaching job for as long as they want - especially if they are clearly not doing as good of a job any more.
For a reason that I still cannot understand, Wisconsin struggles to recruit at an elite level in football or basketball despite being in a top 5 college town with consistently great programs. If they get someone mediocre, it's very easy to see them drifting away for a while
If they opened up the checkbook for coaches that aren't the head coach, then they would be perennial powers.
I don't think their AD makes much cash.

Thought this was gonna be sarcasm at first. I think any school above the Mason-Dixon line has an inherent disadvantage called winter. Wisconsin is pretty far north.
Never been to Madison, but I've heard it's awesome and both their programs have been great for most of the last decade but both teams seem to fill their classes largely with 3 star guys. It's odd to me. I don't get why they can't recruit better and cold doesn't count ime. Ann Arbor, South Bend, and Columbus are cold too
Kind of douchey to throw in there his "hope" that his guy takes over when he's done.
Really? I think's it's great. Being loyal to one of his guys who's been loyal to him for a long time. May put the AD in a little bit of a tough spot, but who cares.
Eh, take care of that stuff behind the scenes. Putting it out there in the statement is making your bosses job unnecessarily difficult and only has the effect of leading on recruits if he's not actually the guy.
Just my opinion, but isn't it reasonable to assume that the statement was reviewed by the AD? Isn't it possible that Ryan and Alvarez have already discussed having his assistant take over?
Yeah - if this has been already worked out, then no problem there.
If it hasn't already been worked out, then the AD might not be too happy with that statement.
My guess is for it to come from an official Wisconsin Basketball Twitter (which that appears to be?) then the AD saw it and was okay with it. Or some intern isn't having a great.
Recruiting opens up and July is a big period for coaches.
I don't think so. He's been there long enough, with enough success, that he should have the right to name his own successor. Especially when that guy has been with the program for 15 years and Bo's associate HC for almost 10. Michigan fans, of all fanbases, should be appreciative of what it takes to finish in the top 4 of the B1G every year since 2000.
...begins a long sleep in its coffin?

Not much. Significant one is Tony Bennett, and he is the son of previous UW coach Dick Bennett so you could make a case that's more the Bennett coaching tree than Ryan's.
Ryan has four former assistant coaches currently serving as Division 1 head coaches: Tony Bennett (Virginia), Rob Jeter (UW-M), Phillips (North Dakota St.), and Howard Moore (UIC). Jeter and Phillips also played for Ryan at UW-Platteville.
...and Tony was a 1-year holdover from his dad's staff.
Wiscy will take a big swing at Bennett since he's dreamy and would be a perfect bball fit, but I can't see that happening. UVA has locked him up long term, he has elite facilities and is in position, roster and recruiting-wise, to be the toast of the ACC as Duke, UNC, Syracuse (and maybe Louisville) transition to post Coach K, Roy, Boeheim and Pitino eras over the next 5 years or so. Bennett has built a machine at UVA that is poised for sustained success in an elite bball conference. He never played at Wiscy, but his dad made his name there. Is that really a draw? Doesn't he want to make his name at another school? Does Wiscy have a viable pitch for Bennett? I could see a bloodblood like Duke, UNC or Kentucky enticing him with $ and prestige but not Wisconsin. As a UVA alum and bball fan I'd love to hear people's thoughts on this. Handsome Tony leaving UVA is a nightare scenario for Wahoo fans.
I hope the program continues to be strong with the next coach. I have found it easy to root for Wisco and most of the players whenever they're not playing Michigan. A solid represenative of the conference.
I think we'll get to see Bo smile a few times the year, which should be scary.

I understand a lot of people dislike their slow play and some other borderline cheap tactics, but they typically don't roll out a squad of Mcdonald's All Americans (much like UM for last 10 yrs). But as an undersized white guy who found a way to compete beyond my athletic abilities during my playing days, I have an appreciation for the craft.
Devin Harris was a pleasure to watch as well.
Good. I won't miss him.
but Skeletor will continue to battle He-Man.
It is because of health reasons, which is too bad. But good for him to be willing to put aside something that has been a major, major part of him (including a major part of the relationship with his recently deceased father) for the sake of his health. Not an easy thing to do by any measure.
I don't know who to believe!!!
But then you're pitting rumors against the credibility of ESPN, and you have a strong argument for believing rumors.
I don't know what to tell you...
Because a blog rumor vs. ESPN is a wash in my book.
ESPN's Jeff Goodman did site speaking to "a player," but still...ESPN is ESPN. And because it's Bo Ryan, it wouldn't shock me if the man has permanent high blood pressure.
Does that look like a healthy man to you?
He looks like he belongs in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
why wait? I mean this in all seriousness...why put himself through another grueling year that will only further tax his health?
At the least, take a sabbatical and come back stronger than ever - or make it permanent. His health should be paramount at this point.
Well, simply being 67 is a health reason.
Ture. He has 1948 disease.
i hate ben brust
Are there any good options for a replacement?
