BC Coach Jeff Hafley taking Packers DC job

Per ESPN’s Ohio State beat writer.

Was a former OSU DC before doing an adequate job at BC (had been on hot seat before the year).

Cycle doesn’t stop. Feels like a Brian Hartline job (will repeat until he leaves).

I think it's a good thing that the players are finally making money off their NIL given how much revenue they are driving for the school overall.  And I think in the absence of actual contracts with the school, it's a good thing that they have some more freedom in terms of transferring.

The issue right now is its become very much the wild west because there are unclear rules on NIL and there's a crazy amount of tampering going on.  The eventual solution is to give athletes some sort of employment status and negotiate a collective bargaining agreement that will have some form of revenue sharing and add some stability to the whole transfer portal process.

I think the real problem was before we had schools making tons of money off these players and they were not seeing any sort of reward commensurate with that.

Feels like any mid tier college coach job isn’t worth it. Feel like this trend of mid tier college coaches becoming coordinators at higher level college programs or moving into the pros is accelerating

I don’t remember it really happening to a P5 coach where they go to another P5 school. But certainly G5 schools. Unless you’re a top of the line G5 program, you’re not likely parlaying that into a quality P5 job. And with P5 jobs starting to pay coordinators more and more, it’s not making sense to stick it out as a head coach at a middling G5 school.

Look at some of the salaries for MAC coaches and then factor in that both of Michigan’s coordinators made north of $1 million last year.

Those jobs are never designed to compete in the first place. The limitations created by the transfer portal are the same limitations in place for their peers.

But Akron is paying Joe Moorhead $650k. He’s a proven OC that has had some really good offenses over the years. How long is he going to stick around Akron before someone at a major program offers to double his salary to run their offense?

College football is getting a less pleasant place to coach I don't doubt, but I am actually surprised you havent' see these kinds of moves more often.  If you just want to coach ball a lot of the stuff that has been part of college coaching for 100 years also seems not that fun.  I can't imagine spending half my working hours sucking up to 17-year-olds, for example

I get they don't do it for free, but I can't imagine dealing with being a college coach right now.

You have to recruit high school kids, the portal, and continually your own roster.

I thank god we won one while college football still resembled the game I grew up with.

Cameron Martinez maybe in the portal again.  Hafley was his main recruiter at OSU, hence the reason he transferred to BC.  Still wonder how his college career would have panned out if he played slot WR (which I think Gattis was recruiting his for).  I guess not to late to make the switch?
