Sparty says:
- We wanted Nick Hill more
- White didn't want to go to MSU because his brother got kicked off the team
- Dantonio stopped recruiting White because of his brother
- Nick Hill is the better prospect
- White is the #14 running back in the State of Michigan
Did I miss anything?
- Nick Hill is the next Mike Hart...only faster.
- Nick Hill could beat Austin White in the 40 running backwards.
You implied discipline problems, but some Spartys have already been fairly explicitly saying (on other boards) that White has discipline problems (although of course they lack any real proof) and that Dantonio does not recruit players like that.
Edit: Of course this all changes if White picks MSU. In which case, he is the nation's top running back.
Eh, let's be honest. We've all known all along about the discipline issues in question -- Brian even mentions it on the recruiting board. He was directly involved with the resignation of the Livonia Stevenson football coach, where he threatened to transfer to Inkster if he weren't fired (which his dad, the principal at Pioneer, publically quashed by more or less saying "My son is leaving Stevenson for an Inkster school? Yeah, right."), and has been suspended multiple times for fighting. There's plenty of proof.
He's obviously an articulate kid either way. We've read the interviews.
RR has a pretty good track record with some of the kids like this, at least based on what we've seen at WVU and so forth. I don't see a problem.
I apparently didn't follow his recruiting close enough (mostly because I just assumed he was going to MSU). I vaguely recall reading something about a fight. But didn't know he got suspended for it.
I also saw the stuff on the recruiting board, but thought that was referring to his brothers that got into the fight at MSU.
So apparently he did have a discipline problem? Color me embarrassed...
Hey, no reason to be embarrassed.
Most of the stuff is covered in this thread:
http://mgoblog.com/content/austin-white-devin-gardner-take-1
Kind of funny looking back at some of these old threads. "Yeah, Devin Gardner is headed to tOSU" and "I will eat my foot if Austin White doesn't head to MSU and doesn't head out of state." Oops.
"Brah"
+1, my friend.
Austin White is picking his school tomorrow?
Can't wait to hear who he picks.
I can almost guarantee he's going to UM. He named MSU and UM as his top 2, while MSU already has Baker and Caper in the preceding class and Nick Hill in his own.
So, not only does he suck and is a recruit that MSU gave an offer out of pity to, he is also scared of competition!!
Why are we even recruiting this kid, HUH?
EDIT - Kids, I am kidding. Easy on the trigger brahs!
...what? All I said was that he's likely to go to UM because MSU already has plenty of running backs. Why are you lashing out so heavily? Just because I'm a Michigan State fan doesn't mean you have to interpret everything I say into a stereotype.
What lashing out are you talking about? From your post - "MSU already has Baker and Caper in the preceding class and Nick Hill in his own." If you are not implying that he is scared of competition, then what are you trying to imply? And where did I even talk about your MSU fandom? And in what way am I stereotyping? You commented and I replied because I did not quite agree with what you were saying. There are a number of reasons why he would pick one school over the other, but you sort of made it sound like the fact there were a number of RBs already there was the primary reason. An assertion that the reply below has rightly skewered with facts and examples.
I do suggest, however, that you do something about this persecution complex of yours :)
Well we had Fitzgerald Toussaint, Vincent Smith, and Teric Jones in the preceding class. Plus we have Stephen Hopkins, and Tony Drake in this class. So what is your point? White isn't afraid of competition, so...
Was his brother playing for MSU the only family connection? I get the impression his family has multiple ties to MSU. Also, who was his brother? (Please forgive my MSU ignorance.)
Mitchell and Myles.
You might remember Mitchell from such instances as:
EAST LANSING -- Michigan State kick returner Glenn Winston can accompany the team to the Capital One Bowl despite being charged in connection with an assault that left a Spartans hockey player seriously injured.
Winston, 19, of Detroit, and Mitchell White, 18, a walk-on who has been off the team since mid-October, were arraigned Tuesday in East Lansing 54-B District Court on misdemeanor charges stemming from an Oct. 19 off-campus incident.
Winston is charged with three counts of aggravated assault and free on a $2,000 personal recognizance bond. White is charged with one count of assault and battery and free on a $500 personal recognizance bond. Both are freshmen and scheduled to appear at pretrial hearings Jan. 14.

Mitchell and Myles. Neither has contributed much. (Mitchell is a walk-on QB who's mostly notable for being involved in a fight the week before the U-M game last season -- the one involving the hockey player and Glenn Winston. Myles may get a look at WR this season.) Also, apparently both of Austin's parents are MSU grads.
I'd love to see him in Green and White; he's a good player. All indications are that he's Ann Arbor-bound. C'est la vie.
Both parents are MSU alums, and the father holds several track records at State. Dude's a rebel with a cause, homie.
Glad I won't have to wait long a new round of "Why are we recruiting position X and not position Y" posts.....
Seriously...damn...we are going to be loaded.
We're going to need a label for the year 2010, because there will be blood.
I hope he picks M. To me, its a big statement going against your family ties and picking the rival. I'd like to see Austin redshirt his freshman year in order to bulk up and learn the playbook.
RR is stockpiling talent at the offensive skill positions. We have some very dynamic players in the fold for years to come. I'm excited to see what these kids can do come Saturdays.
....is a significant dearth of young talent at DE, CB, and S. Cullen Christian, Brandon Ifill, and 3 other dudes, come on down!
I think most of Jim Brandstatters family are Spartans, Brandy is one who came over from the Greenside.
I may be wrong on this, but I remember something along these lines.
Brandy's dad was a legendary player for MSU and later a faculty member, his brother was an all American in State's glory days and Brandy was East Lansing born and bred.
Unless you have seen this kid in person, spent time with him, and watched his videos...then RR and his staff know more than you. He has been offered, is considered a top in state prospect, and he seems to consistantly score TDs.
Therefore: we want him, the coaches know what they are doing.
going to Ann Arbor. This Spartan wishes him well, and admit I wish he would choose E.L. No worries though, hopefully there will be some great games to come in the next four/five years. I am tired of MSU winning once every few years.
I thought that Michigan was done and that MSU was the dominant instate power???? I though that that one win changed everything?
Ease up, the fact that he is around on MgoBlog means you should probably give him the benefit of the doubt for not being a doofus.
Spartyon19962001, what is your picture of? I think i see a spartan mascot standing in front of the post-apocalyptic rubble of some city (EL?). I am sure after you explain the picture will seem clear, but right now I cant figure out what the hell that picture is of. Thanks.
It looks like Sparty in a mall.
it is actually the mascot at the pep-rally for the MSU basketball team held at Somerset Place in Troy, MI, before the Final Four game against UCONN.
I don't think it's that surprising that White isn't headed to MSU -- yeah, he has the family ties, but he's a smart kid and knows that his role will likely be limited in MSU's offense. He's not an up-the-gut runner, and he excels once he gets in space. He'll have a lot more wide open looks in RR's system.
Mcfarlin wasn't a "doofus"?
It's not official until it's official but it does look like he's going to UofM. If he does and RR can bring in Iffil, Christian and possibly Floyd...I'd consider the man a genius considering they just came off a 3-9 season.
So maybe the W Va. writer thinks Rodriguez is gone but some reason it looks like a lot of recruits and their families think differently.
