Any MGoBurners out there?

Submitted by 608Monroe on

Hey MGoBloggers,

I'm knocking out a bucket list item next month by heading out with a Detroit/Philly based group of maniacs to Burning Man.  This has been two years in the making, and even though I'm married/50 years old and will most like die on the playa of Black Rock City, Nevada, I'm wondering if there will be anyone from the MGoBlog community coming out to die with me.

This is something I've wanted to do forever, and even though I'm not the granola-eating, hippie, experiential type, I'm excited to see how a community of 70,000 people rises in the desert, has countless venues or music, art, and culture, and then disappears without a trace a week later.  Begged the wife and close friends to come with me.  And even though I have my wife's enthusiastic support, she was a solid no-freaking-way about attending with me.  Friends were all like, "It's your funeral, dude..."

So.  Anyone going?

I admire your moxie to do that.  Enjoy!  Just watch out for bad 4-way windowpane.  This in no way indicates I have experience with such a thing when I went to all day concerts back in the 70s and saw Yes in their prime blow my mind.  No, not at all.

It kind of sounds like the Medieval Fair I went to back in the early 80s, but on steroids.  Which means...it probably takes weird to a whole new level.

I registered just to provide some moral support here. This will be year 20 for me at the event. There will be a camp somewhere showing the N.Dame game if you want to take time out to find it.. Stop in at our camp, Hostel, at 9 and E and say hello.    Go Blue.

First I thought it was about smoking weed and didn't didn't give a shit.

Then I got excited because I thought maybe it was about smoking meat.

Then I clicked and realized that I gave fewer shits than I had originally thought.

Enjoy!  It’s amazing. I tried to track down MGoBurners years ago to see if someone was going to get Harbaugh’s first game as Coach at Michigan, which occurred during the burn. It was futile which was for the best (Alabama).

Drop all and any expectations, get weird, cry at the temple, make bacon for strangers, do acid at nighttime, climb the tallest piece of art, take a nap, roll in the dust, ride in an art car, go to camp Brauners where they will bathe you, gift something special, make new friends, change your life perspective, wear lots of sunscreen and drink lots of water.

Thanks, Steve. I’m with you on literally everything you said (except the acid).  I’m excited about seeing a lot of “crazy" and employing the rule of “radical inclusion” and “radical self expression.” And just using the time to get a little perspective.  I’m as corporate and conservative as one could be in my real life, so this should be quite the exercise for me.

On a side note, I told my family there’s at least a 50% chance I’m home before the burn ends.  Not planning on that. But I leave open the possibility.

Oooh....then the worm is going to turn for you, if you do it right and embrace it. I do recommend doing some LSD or mushrooms one night, or better yet some ecstasy....perfect place for it.

If you go home early you will regret it your entire life, so don't do that whatever you do. First few days can be rough to get acclimated to how dry it is. Read all the survival guides carefully and don't do something stupid that will force you to leave early like get super sunburned or walk around barefoot (the playa dust is extremely alkaline and will very quickly make your feet crack open and render you unable to walk).

Please do write a recap, interested to know how it works out.

I went for about 4 hours maybe 20 years ago.  On my way home(Sacramento) from Vegas with some buddies and 1 friend kept talking about it.  The rest of us pretty much wanted to go home and sleep after a Vegas trip, iirc.

Dusty.  Hot.  People were incredibly nice.  Pretty weird cool stuff.  Wasn't there at night so didn't see all the fire attractions unfortunately.

Vegas is probably about a 180 from Burning Man.  Strange trip.

Logged in for the first time in years to post here.

On football Saturday, there will be a guy named Puma hosting a college football watch party. It’s in the book so just look for one time events on Saturday and it will give the camp name and address. You'll show up thinking maybe you’ll get to watch a quarter in between partying and naps only to find out it’s a god damn Michigan watch party in the desert. I’ve been going for 8 years and this past was the first time I stumbled upon the event. I literally walked up to a camp of 30 Michigan fans, all decked out huddled around a TV in a shade structure on the playa. Pumas is an Ann Arbor cat that graduated in the 80s whose been to many burns. He will make you drink. You will be thrilled because you’re at the greatest party on Earth and Michigan football is on.

Go Blue and welcome home!!!

I went for 5 years with one if the original big sound camps in 96, 97, 98, 99 and 2003.

It is unreal and you will have a blast. Every year I say I'm going to go back and every year too little, too late. I do participate in tons of the pre-BM fundraiser all-nighters here in San Francisco that go off for the next few months though.

If you can, check out the Thursday party at the Green Gorilla camp, that is the continuation of the camp I used to go with and they have sublime DJs.
