1993: Bill Clinton's Letter to Chris Webber

Submitted by Marley Nowell on

Very thoughtful letter that I feel resonates with the team's situation today.

I have been thinking of you a lot since I sat glued to the TV during the championship game. I know that there may be nothing I or anyone else can say to ease the pain and disappointment of what happened. Still, for whatever it's worth, you, and your team, were terrific. And part of playing for high stakes under great pressure is the constant risk of mental error. I know. I have lost two political races and made countless mistakes over the last twenty years. What matters is the intensity, integrity, and courage you bring to the effort. That is certainly what you have done. You can always regret what occurred but don't let it get you down or take away the satisfaction of what you have accomplished. You have a great future. Hang in there.
Sincerely, Bill Clinton

A post that features Bill Clinton and Chris Weber on the day after we lost in the NCAA title game?  This may not end well.

I appreciate what you are trying to do here, but this may not end well.

Webber shouldnt hang his head about the timeout.... for Michael Talley was screaming from the bench  to call a timeout..and Webber had two guys on him... thats an easy mistake......   so be it.... he shouldnt have hung his head like he did, but the media blitz on him was more to give it back for all the mocking showboating, a big "look at me" and he had everyone doing so.....     we probably wouldn't have won anyway.

Bill Clinton writes to Chris Webber to remind him that what matters is integrity and courage.  Without a hint of irony.

People on this board can't approach a single thread that has someone's name in it that even approaches controversy and resist stupid, immature comments.

Really pathetic.

I am as into politics as I am Michigan football and basketball. Those two things (and golf and pretty women) fill my head all day every day.

It's really disappointing that anything having to do with politics is verbotin on this site.  Not that I'm disagreeing with the ban, rather that, for some reason, passion over politics gets ugly in about a nanosecond in a medium like this.  If "Clinton" or "Bush" are words used for anything other than street names, all hell breaks loose.  Even if the reference is clearly ON-topic like the one that started this thread.

It just bums me out.

Look, political decisions have a huge impact on our lives.  They affect how much I pay in taxes, the quality of my education/healthcare, whether or not my sons/firends go to or come back from war and whether or not I can smoke weed or get married or pray in school or own a gun.

Because these things affect our lives so much, people tend to be very sensitive about them.  It's not just on the internet, it's in person too.  Political debates have a tendency to get ugly among people who really care for each other, let alone among perfect strangers hiding behind anonymity.

Sure, that's a bummer, but that will always be the way it is.

Exactly. I love the "no politics" rule. Otherwise our threads would just degenerate. It's hard enough to keep us from fighting one another constantly over trivial BS. And we're all Blue fans. MGBlog rulez in part because we steer clear of the things that ruin otherwise decent threads.

much into politics but I don't discuss them or even bring up the name of a politian (and the only people I down vote are people that bring up politics and the grammar nazi's) on this site and I think it is a good thing. I have been into many arguments on other sites that don't discourage politics, so it is nice to have a blog that is free of politics.

Why isn't the point guard of the team running directly to Chris Webber to get the ball from him? If that were Trey he would've went to Webber and stole the ball from him.

...Clinton & Webber?  Can we get a shout out to Coach Rich Rodriguez too while we are at it?  Claude Lemieux, you in the house?  Unabomber?  Saddam?  Hello, anybody there?

You forgot Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Jim Jones, and pedophiles. Because all of those people are exactly the same morally.

Something just doesn't sit well with me. Why did Talley clap? It was never determined WHO was signaling timeout. Talley was clapping when he called it though.

What makes me question the sincerity of the play are these points-

  1. Chris clearly traveled in front of the ref. Almost blatantly
  2. He dribbled right past a WIDE OPEN Jalen Rose who was the PG and calling for the ball.
  3. He dribbled into the corner
  4. He called the timeout

I'm not saying HE threw the game. But Martin operated a gambling ring. What if he was forced to? By Martin saying "throw the game or I sing like a bird about the money changing hands".

Something to certainly think about. Do I believe he did it? No. But I do think it's a play and a sequence that will always remain shrouded in mystery.

And for the record, I'm not a Webber hater. Love the guy. My twitterz banner is him dunking in the '91 Final Four against Cincy.
