OT: Most Likable College Football Coaches
A month or two ago mine would be:
1. Joe Paterno
2. Rich Rodriguez
3. Randy Shannon
4. Bob Green (Montana Tech)
5. Jim Harbaugh
But now 4 of those 5 aren't coaching college football anymore. I'm perplexed, the best I can come up with is:
1. Joe Paterno
2. Brady Hoke
3. Pat Fitzgerald
Am I becoming jaded, or are most coaches just doucher A-holes?

Charlie Weis, thanks for the memories.

Most likeable is easily Mark Richt who I think is one of the good guys. Best coach to me is Saban. I think Mullen is a nice combo of likeable and good and the man I wish was coaching Michigan.

Like his coaching style, Tech's been a good team under him and I can't come up with anything bad to say about the guy.

This
Not controversial at all, just a likable old fella
Speaking of the 4-foot, 100-pound-plus cup, there was a report that several Tech players took it out on the town last year and drank adult beverages from it. When asked if he were involved, Beamer laughed and then proceeded to blow the whistle on ex-Hokie linebacker Cody Grimm, currently a rookie with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"I think Cody Grimm was the leader of that pack,'' Beamer said. "You might have to call Tampa and get his take on that.''
Harbaugh doesn't belong in a classy list - remember he was the one who ran it up on Pete and had Pete peeved off. Doesn't seem like class to me

Definitely not Harbaugh, dude has always seemed like an arrogant ass to me. That said, I wouldn't have minded his arrogant ass roaming our sidelines. Frank Beemer has always seemed like a nice, classy guy IMO.

*Beamer

Beamer's a classy guy if you like the Dantonio/Bowden approach to disciplining players: don't, unless they're third-stringers.

2. Whoever is playing OSU
3. Whoever is playing MSU
4. Whoever is playing ND
5. I'm totally screwed when MSU plays OSU and ND so I play with kittens instead of watching the game

I root for "Meteor Impact Ground Zero" whenever ytMSU and tSIO are on the same field.
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:44 PM ^
Petersen seems very likable. And dedicated to his school.
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:44 PM ^
I still shed a tear of joy when I hear the name John Cooper. Those were good times.
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:48 PM ^
Cooper was easily the most likable coach in college football history. Bar none.

Aaaaw, what's wrong, big guy? Remember the 90s?
<hug>

Chip Kelly. Nobody else arm-swings quite like that.
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:45 PM ^
As much as I hate tOSU, I've always had respect for him.
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:50 PM ^
Negged for expressing positive emotion towards Tressel and tsio. That is all.
January 23rd, 2011 at 12:32 AM ^
but I gotta give credit where it's due. He's not a douche and he respects the rivalry. The Hoke-Tressel era will be very exciting to watch.
January 23rd, 2011 at 12:19 PM ^
but an absolute douche nugget in all other aspects. I mean look at that sweater vest, really?
And sorry to say but he doesn't respect the rivalry as much as you'd think. If he did he wouldn't allow his team to wear those god awful alternates the last 2 years.
Not to mention that smug look he's always giving in interviews. I HATE JIM TRESSEL.
January 23rd, 2011 at 5:24 AM ^
Jim Tressel is one of the fakest men I have ever seen in any walk of life.

Saban! /s
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:48 PM ^
Well, he's not really likable, but pirates rarely arrgh.
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:49 PM ^
Nick Saban, Lane Kiffin, Les Miles, Pete Carrol, Mike Leach, and possibly a few I forgot.

January 22nd, 2011 at 10:51 PM ^
Bobby Petrino, Urban Meyer, Bret Bielema
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:57 PM ^
I can't believe I forgot Bielema. That guy's a total DOUCHE.
Seriously though, I think Mack Brown should be right up there on the list for likeable coaches.
January 23rd, 2011 at 1:54 AM ^
... Who is a bigger meathead, brett bielema or bo peleni. Just two guys who look like they would be unable to have a conversation that isnt about football.
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:49 PM ^
Gotta be in the top 5 somewhere.
"...Come after me!! I'm a man!! I'm forty!!"
Who wouldnt want to play for that guy?
January 23rd, 2011 at 11:45 AM ^
and I +1 you--automatically. Never gets old.
January 23rd, 2011 at 11:57 AM ^

Harbaugh didn't have much of a personality or sense of humor, or loyalty; but he had intensity, toughness, and the ability to win games; and he did it the right way. That's why I "like" him.
January 22nd, 2011 at 10:56 PM ^
"Dang gum it..."
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
Mack Brown is a great politician. The Texas alums love him. He accepts the blames for losses and he replaces long-time assistants when they aren't getting the job done.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:38 PM ^
I agree that Mack Brown has always been rather likeable to me. I don't follow Texas that closely so I don't know about any little things that might piss people off, but when he is around on TV and such he looks like a good guy.
On the other side of the Texas-Oklahoma rivalry, I always liked Bob Stoops as well. Same kind of politician's demeanor of always looking good in public.
Basically, this list comes down to who doesn't look like a douche on a regular basis, like Bielema, Dantonio, Saban or Urban Meyer. Or who hasn't gotten caught cheating like Carroll and Miles (and Saban again).
January 23rd, 2011 at 5:26 AM ^
I wonder how much Texas alums would love him had they ran out of time against Nebraska and not played in the national title game because of ol' Mack's clock management?
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:01 PM ^
Danny Hope.
January 23rd, 2011 at 1:48 AM ^
... the end of the michigan purdue game when he brought zach reckman to midfield. He's garbage to me.
January 23rd, 2011 at 7:31 AM ^
and blow away.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:09 PM ^
Fred Jackson, of course.

Hate to say it but sweatervest is not only a hellofa coach, he's a pretty nice guy too. I met him the year he got the OSU gig at a banquet here in Cleveland and despite me wearing a M shirt and making a snarky comment he was funny, talked to me about life in general and made me feel like he genuinely cared about my opinion on things.
January 22nd, 2011 at 11:27 PM ^
Also, if he removes the sweater vest he disappears in a puff of smoke.
