OT: UM Early Admissions Decisions
I just thought I should share some good news with the rest of the MGoCommunity, a lot of negativity has been going on lately, but today I was given the opportunity to attend the University of Michigan in the form of an acceptance e-mail. It has always been my dream to attend UM, and once it became painfully apparent I would not be the next Braylon Edwards, I went for the more academic route, and it's great that I can finally realize that dream. 'Tis the season for a lot of great news coming to high school seniors.
Go Blue!
P.S. No, I cannot kick field goals either, sorry.

"... you are probably going to urinate into a potted plant and vomit on someone standing close by ..."
Ha -- I took care of that in 9th grade after the state swim meet. Left an impression on me, let me tell you ...

Get that early Orientation! Don't wanna end up with 8AM's across the board
December 16th, 2010 at 5:46 PM ^
I remember scheduling an orientation for mid July since my high school in California didnt finish until mid June. I avoided the early classes but had Calc 115 from 3:30-5:30. There arent many things more depressing than walking to Couzens from Dennison at 5:30pm in December. I also had random 3 hour blocks in the middle of the day with no class.
Assuming you live within 2 hours of Ann Arbor, select the earliest possible orientation!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:59 PM ^
Haha I remember my freshman year schedule. It was awful - a few 8 am starts, a few days with huge gaps between classes - I didn't know what I was doing.
Compare that with my 2nd semester senior year where I took 12 credits (3 online - <3 EDUC 362), don't think I started before 10 am and didn't finish any later than 2 pm with no Friday classes. Live and learn.
December 16th, 2010 at 8:14 PM ^
I worked at the front desk for the orientation for the past two years. I would highly recommend on getting the early orientation asap for scheduling purposes. I didn't schedule for an early orientation because of my obligations with my baseball team(has state title aspirations) which sucks.

They save spots in everything and release it gradually over the summer. Summer Orientation Leader Knowledge!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:07 PM ^
Congrats. Can you shoot 3's?
December 16th, 2010 at 5:26 PM ^
I would say yes I can, but my IM B-Ball teammates (some of whom read this site) would say that I probably shouldn't ever take the three.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:10 PM ^
Congrats and welcome to the family! We need more passionate students like you!
Live it up and have no regrets. It'll be the best 4 years of your life!
PS... Markley is the dorm you want. 4th Reeves baby!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:20 PM ^
I always wanted to live in Stockwell....
December 16th, 2010 at 5:26 PM ^
Well now you can!
/infomercial voice
They finally wised up and made it coed.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:30 PM ^
At least since 1976, I guess it became officially accepted after I left in 1981.....
December 16th, 2010 at 8:23 PM ^
Stockwell was ladies-only until it reopened after renovations (in '09?). Staying over was a little weird, mostly thanks to the mini-walk of shame you had to undertake every time you walked down to the only men's bathroom on the first floor.

Not an issue anymore, but it used to make for an interesting experience nonetheless.

PS - For a real challenge, try staying over in the conservative, Stepford-esque Martha Cook - strict no males after midnight policy. If the RA came by, you'd have to Anne Frank-it in the closet or wherever.

I did for a year... Meeting people you knew in the one "guy's shower" downstairs was always a mix of awkward and high five!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:25 PM ^
good news congratulations.
south quad is not a bad place to be by the way, hopefully you dont end up on north
December 16th, 2010 at 5:25 PM ^
One warning on senioritis and throwing away your books the next 4 months:
Unless I am mistaken, your admission is conditional. Should you really tank your last Semester, Michigan reserves the right to pull your admission. I know of one 20 year old who had his admission to Univ. of Illinois pulled for this very reason.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:35 PM ^
Thanks, I have a few AP classes on my schedule so I think the possibility of getting credits will forestall the senioritis enough to get me through. Plus my mom (an alumna) would kill me and that wouldn't be good.

The thought of passing on those tests... too good to bear right now.

December 16th, 2010 at 11:53 PM ^
Yes they threaten that...it really is just a plea to keep their incoming freshman GPA up. My daughter slid to a few C's in her last HS semester and never heard a peep. She is now a junior at UM.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:25 PM ^
West Quad dude, West Quad. Enjoy.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:28 PM ^
As a former South quaddie I can definitely say 'WEST QUAD SUCKS!!"
(usually at 1 am back in 1980 walking back to South Quad from Dooley's....
:0)
December 16th, 2010 at 5:26 PM ^
The fun you will have, the people you will be surrounded by, the experience you will gain!
Ahh, to return to the days of being a South Quad resident advisor in 1979-1981 when I had no money but no bills and no responsibilities either!
Good Luck and keep us posted on how things go! Inquiring MGoBloggers will want to know!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:26 PM ^
Best four years of your life. Guaranteed. Congratulations.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:27 PM ^
Congratulations, Have a blast

About North Campus:
It's not a death sentence... just means you'll have a great excuse for sleepovers on Central. But don't sign up for just because you're an engineer/music major/whatever... you'll probably only have one class there per semester. Yay prereqs!
And Markley's fun and all but you'll end up wanting to take the bus from there once it gets cold anyway.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:33 PM ^
Never agree to take a breathalyzer.
Never admit to drinking alcohol to DPS...ever!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:33 PM ^
I was also accepted and it is by far the best feeling in the world...good luck to all the people waiting to hear back.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:41 PM ^
Congrats to you too!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:41 PM ^
Yes, today was the first day of decision releases and apparently, almost everyone who applied early in state heard back.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:43 PM ^
Congrats man, (or woman, I guess). Hopefully Dee decides to join us!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:46 PM ^
It's funny how we're both hoping Dee is the savior of Michigan football and yet he is the same age as us...kinda creepy too.
December 16th, 2010 at 6:53 PM ^
Agreed, it's weird that I'll be seeing Wolverines on the field that are as old as I am.
December 16th, 2010 at 8:22 PM ^
I had the same feeling with Tate and now Denard
December 16th, 2010 at 5:42 PM ^
...it will be the best four years of your life and will join an alumni base that stretches across the world.
And you've got all Spring to learn how to kick - don't worry
December 16th, 2010 at 5:44 PM ^
On all the commentary from people saying "do it in five years, not four", here's an analogy to keep in mind for the OP:
Attending college is like dating a stripper. You know what you're getting yourself into - you know the pluses (tons) and the minuses (finals / pure female insanity). You know in the end, it's a good thing. But you know you can only let it go on for so long.
Stick around for that fifth year, and most of your buddies are gone. It's not the same. It cheapens the experience. And barring a change in majors, your GPA isn't likely to be so great (I don't know of many fifth years that had a great one). Thus, your liklihood of landing a sweet job is reduced.
Stick with that stripper for too long (say 5 months instead of 4, keeping with the 5/4 montra), and things start to get weird. People start to talk, family members become concerned. And you start to look like a fool to your friends because she's clearly playing you and not vice-versa.
Yes I have dated a stripper.
December 16th, 2010 at 6:45 PM ^
And like college dating a stripper is something to be experienced and enjoyed, but not for too long a time!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:45 PM ^
I'm graduating on Sunday with a masters degree, so as I leave, you can take my spot :)
I wish I could be here longer though.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:48 PM ^
You are now in one of the finest universities in the nation . Make use of your time investing in yourself and working to your potential.

It's good ... to be ... a Michigan Wolverine!!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:52 PM ^
Wrong, It's Great to be a Michigan Wolverine!!!
December 16th, 2010 at 5:51 PM ^
now wanna take my calc final for me tomorrow morning???
Im about to go into a hardcore studying session...in an...hour lol
December 16th, 2010 at 5:57 PM ^
Congrats! Enjoy it while you can, but view it as a stepping stone to even greater moments in your life. Get your seats for 2010-2011 in the Big House and make sure to keep them warm all four years.
December 16th, 2010 at 5:59 PM ^
congrats to everyone who got in..i got deferred :/. i have better stats than most iv talked to so not sure why. worst day iv had in a while :(
December 16th, 2010 at 6:11 PM ^
I didn't get into Michigan for undergrad either and had the same problem. If you got waitlisted, get all A's and send in the transcript after school ends. If you don't get in, go somewhere else and have a great experience.
My life has been great so far, and your's will be too.
December 16th, 2010 at 6:11 PM ^
depends on when you applied. that's huge. my friend got in with a 25 on his ACT, but he applied the first possible day. i applied in late october, and heard back before him, but we both got in. but i still like to make fun of him for that.
but you are a Catholic League guy right? (i am too). keep the faith. if it's meant to be, it'll happen.
December 16th, 2010 at 6:21 PM ^
Keep your head up, I talked to my councilor and he said getting deferred isn't that bad this year and no one who gets deferred should be too worried as long as they have good stats. Good luck when your next decision comes out.
December 16th, 2010 at 6:46 PM ^
thanks everyone, and ya hopefully i get in. had a 31 and 3.8 unweighted :/. know someone with a 24 who got in and someone with a 33 who didnt. if not, i guess im goin to that other in state school who accepted me in like a week haha
