CC: Does the bowl game really matter for RR?

Submitted by sammylittle on

I have seen several people comment that the bowl game is make or break for RR.  I can't see how the bowl game makes much difference.  Our bowl opponent has yet to be determined and could be either very tough, mediocre, or somewhere between.  The main arguments for replacing RR:  bad defense, losses to rivals, 33% winning percentage in conference will not be changed by a bowl victory.  The main arguments for retaining RR:  improvement, youth/inexperience, offensive genius, etc. also will not be changed by the bowl result.  I have to believe that DB has a good idea about what he will do and is just checking with his subordinates and being sure he is not too hasty in his decision.  Also, like an NFL receiver in the end zone, AD's must complete the process or any decision they make will be void.

I don't think just a win would change anything. I was referring to a totally dominating performance(probably unlikely) where the offense is totally off the charts efficient ,and explosive scoring points at will. The defense is stout beyond anyone's imagination with interceptions and forced fumbles and plenty of three and outs, and pitch a shut out good.

I think at this point, evidence points towards RR being on his way out the door. From a logical standpoint it's the only scenario that makes sense. Dave Brandon is not a dumb person, he understands the negative effect that holding out with his decision until after the bowl game is having on the program.

I can't think of one reason, from Brandon's perspective, as to why you wouldn't come out and say "We're keeping Rich around," if that were indeed the case. That would only help out the program. I also have a hard time believing he hasn't already made up his mind on what he is doing. This points towards him already having a coach in mind and just waiting for the season to play out before he finalizes everything.

I wouldn't mind keeping RR around, but as each day goes by, that outcome seems to get further and further away.

Here are the possible explanations:

1)  DB is waiting because HE is going to make a change on the defensive side of the ball.  If he has a press conference and announces that RR is staying and is getting a contract extension, then the next question will be, "Are all of the coaches staying?"

By waiting to make an announcement, he can delay answering that question.

This is why I don't think DB waiting tells us one way the other on RR, but GERG is GAURANSHEED to be outta here.

2) DB is assuming that since there is a quite period and kids can still register AFTER he has announced his decision, that it doesn't really affect recruiting.

3) DB honestly believes that each person should be evaluated at the "end of the year," not before.  It's an integrity thing with him.
