There is a live web cam of the rink being built on Mgoblue.com. Scroll about halfway down the page.

They're really working away down there.

They wasted no time getting started. Good stuff!

I am getting chills just watching them build the rink.

big chills, perchance?

But now, not only will I feel like my work is insignificant, I will get even less of it done because I'm watching them build a freaking hockey rink in the Big House.

I didn't think I could find it absorbing, watching people lay plywood (or whatever that is) on the field, but it's a bigger potential time suck than I imagined.

I can't believe how good the picture is.

Nice - thanks for posting - will be fun to follow this

Thats pretty cool. Also, I'm sure this was discussed previously, but for anybody that didn't know, there will be fireworks at this game. Hopefully they score a lot, because it looks like fireworks will follow michigan goals. The fireworks at the UCONN game were a success, so I'm sure these won't dissapoint. http://www.mgoblue.com/sports/m-hockey/spec-rel/111910aaa.html

That is pretty slick.

How do they make up for the crest in the field. Do they make ice thicker on outside, or do they build up the sides to make the surface under the ice level?
November 22nd, 2010 at 10:46 AM ^
I believe they are going to lay a level surface on the field before constructing the rink.
November 22nd, 2010 at 10:54 AM ^
I think they lay the plywood to protect the field and distribute the weight, and then they layout a specially designed layer of foam pads/blocks that will level out the crest of the field. So in effect they are building up the sides.

There was a pretty decent article on annarbor.com last week that talked about what they have to do, and what they did at Spartan Stadium before the Cold War.

there is much a crown on that field since they installed field turf

Here is a picture from last years Wisconsin-Michigan outdoor game at Camp Randell. I believe they have field turf as well. Check out picture 3/16 for a great visual as to how much crown is on the field there. I am assuming that Michigan has pretty much the same set up.

That's quite a bit more than I thought it had. Wow. Thanks for the pics.

I hope when it's all said and done they post some time lapse footage of them setting up the rink as well.
And it's gotta be miserable out there in this rain, but at least it's kinda warmish today.

Thank God nobody can watch me on a web came while I'm at work. While I'm screwing around on the internet, those people are actually down there working. I feel like such a loafer.
Then again, if my workplace was on the field at Michigan Stadium, I'd probably be a lot more motivated...

Makes me both happy and somewhat sad. A. Its for the big chill which is going to be fucking awesome. B. Covering up the field reminds me that we only have 2 more games of football this year.

Better than only 1 game!

put in to make this the biggest hockey game played outdoors. Thanks Turfguy for putting this up + 1 to you! Now I can show my gf that the field won't get all soggy come spring.

As I spent more time than I care to admit watching this over the last day or so, seeing the forklifts going in and out, I wondered how the Zamboni machine is going to get in and out? With the addtl bleachers they put in the tunnel, it's a pretty tight fit down there now? Any ideas?
