Rumored Five Star visiting for Iowa

Submitted by umhero on

For those of you who don't like recruiting speculation at 2:00 a.m. ignore this post.  I was just catching up on about a weeks worth of Sam Webb's Recruiting Roundup on WTKA.  Several times during the week he mentioned a surprise 5 Star visitor coming for the Iowa game.  I realize that it was mentioned on the board last week (probably when Sam originally said it), but I think the guesses at the time were wrong.

Scout has 49 players listed as 5 Stars.  I have highlighted players that have been mentioned as Michigan prospects at some point in the process.

As you can see, players highlighted in green have already indicated they plan to visit, so, I believe, they should be removed from our "surprise visitor" prospects. Sam said Michigan's start has reignited this player's interest so I assume that means he would be among the players in red. These players were recruited by Michigan but they commited somewhere else or they mentioned we weren't in their favorites.

Reviewing the names two seem like possibilities.  Deanthony Thomas, who TomVH indicated in July would keep an eye on us, and Trey DePriest, who grew up a Michigan fan but was scared off by our struggles.

Does anyone want to speculate?

wasn't he down to basically 'bama and tOSU? I would think it'd be either of the 2 CB's, Doran Grant or DeAnthony Thomas. Our CB depth chart is showing them they could play right away, Grant is from OH and Thomas may not be as committed to USC with the sanctions troubles. But man would DePriest be nice.

You left out Curtis Grant, who was mentioned recently.

And I vaguely recall something about Christian LeMay.

Though I had a post a few days ago on this subject and predicted its HaHa, the player that is piquing my interest is Lawrence Thomas.  Can anyone offer any tidbits or thoughts on why Thomas may switch to us, other than immediate playing time or whatever, since I have not heard of any interest from him whatsoever. Though how the top prospect in the state who would get immediate playing time on a soon-to-be championship team with constant national exposure, who doesn't show any interest in us, is beyond me.

Well, if it's supposed to be a shocker of a visit I would go with Depriest. As mentioned earlier TD was supposely a lifelong UM fan and then all of a sudden he committed to Bama without giving us a second thought. Presumably he shunned us due to the struggles the program has had to endure the past 2 years...Makes you wonder about a kid who's supposedly a fan and doesn't even visit. But hey I'm willing to let bygones be beygones. We need a strong MLB presence and Depriest certainly plays the part. I remember reading an interview in which he mentions he was pulling for UM during the 2006 Game of the Century and how the Shawn Crable late hit on Troy Smith ripped his heart out. Btw, that Crable hit ranks up there as the worst officiating call (or no call as the case may be) that we've ever had to endure. I would say the other is the MSU mugging of Desmond Howard ( a no call) on a 2 point conversion during my freshman year at UM). Both were horrible and both decided the outcome of the game...

Don't use the Rivals 5 star list.  Webb works for Scout.  There are some differences in 5 star lists between the two sites.  Just saying.

Did Webb actually confirm that this mystery visitor is a 5-star?  I thought he just said it was a big-time guy and one of his callers inferred that he meant "five-star."
