Follow-on topic: what should UM play Nebraska for?
So we were having the discussion in my office about my last post (waht should Neb & Iowa play for) when the Husker grad in my office brought up a good point... forget Iowa, what should we (Neb & UM) play for? Outside the obvious, a division title and birth in the BT title game, we came up with the following:
- a black flag to hang over the loser's painted "1997 National Championship" sign in their stadium
- a vial of Tom Osborne's tears (since they have the magic property of being able to change voters minds in an instant)
- Each other's 1997 Nat'l championship trophy (the winner gets to keep the loser's trophy for the year)
- the soul of Tim Brewster
other thoughts?

1997 NC Trophy:
That's a great idea; of course we'd keep the original at all times, and if Nebraska were to ever beat us, they could take home a nice Replica Trophy.
It would be made of Spam®.

Interesting ideas from the original poster and others, but does every rivalry have to have a trophy associated with it? I agree with the poster above who said that we don't want to make this into something like the Land Grant Trophy. Why force it? A rivalry can develop and grow without it being fabricated by introducing some made-up trophy.
The thing that's cool about The Jug is that it wasn't born by someone saying, "hey, we need a trophy to compete for." It came about because we left our jug behind after a game and they said, "come and play us for it," and the trophy rivalry was born. Why not just start up our series with Nebraska and see what develops?

This is the correct reply. We don't need no stinkin trophy to get motivated to beat Nebraska. There are too many stupid trophies already - as evidenced by that horrendously hilarious Land Grant abortion posted above. All I care about coming away with from this game is a big capital W. That's ALL that matters.

That is a really great question. I like the idea of taking the others 1997 NCAA title trophy for a season. Although that's not probable I'm sure they will come up with something since the game is going to be very important every year.

They will play for bragging rights and the chance to win the division. I think that is more then enough. However, if the powers that be decide on a trophy or something to play for then I am all for it.

The losers get dunked in a large vat of creamed corn. The winning team does the dunking (something akin to that carnival game where you hit the target to put someone in the water).
Yeah - creamed corn. Delicious.

We'll regularly be at each other for the division, which means the Conference Title Game, which means a BCS or NC game.
I'm thinking that'll top everything else besides OSU most seasons.
