From the sounds of it, Nicholas Petit-Frere and his family were extremely impressed with the efforts Urban Meyer has placed on professional development beyond the NFL/football field.
I am taking this to mean the weekly "Real Life Wednesdays" seminar that Urban started at Ohio State in 2013. Every week Urban invites prominent members of the business and industry world to give lectures on "real life" topics (i.e. resume development, interview etiquette, networking, and etc.). Urban organizes a bi-yearly career fair that he has opened up to all student-athletes at Ohio State, which has allowed numerous students to land internships, interviews, and contacts in various career fields.
Urban said he had this revelation when he was attending recruiting pitches for his own children as they were pursuing college athletics (volleyball and baseball). As a parent, Urban realized how little he cared about what jersey numbered they were offering, or what kind of super sweet gear the team had, and wanted to know instead what they program could do to help advance his children's future beyond "getting them a free degree."

this happens at a lot of universities and not just the bubble you live in....and a freakin bi-yearly career fair or "real life wednesday" wasnt what pushed him to osu. lol spare me

I am sure that some colleges do a version of it, but none of them are as publicized as Ohio State's program. Plus, I would not be surprised if the program at Ohio State is one of the most developed ones since Urban does it on a weekly basis at the sacrfice of potential practice/film time.
Former OC Tom Herman said that it was the first time he had seen or heard a program like it during his coaching career, and he liked it so much that he has carried it with him to Houston and Texas now.

The fact that OSU fans think this is some ground breaking idea sums up why your university is a joke.
February 6th, 2018 at 5:41 PM ^
I never said it was "ground-breaking" and I even said other schools probably have similar programs. I am saying is that Urban Meyer has actually made it a highly publicized aspect of the football program, and has made it a focal point of his recruitment pitch. Multiple recruits' family every single class since 2013 has specifically named the program as a huge deciding factor for them.
If other programs really are doing it to the extent and level that Ohio State has integrated it into the football program, then good for them and maybe they should start highlighting it. It would probably impress the parents of prospective recruits more than all the fresh, new kicks and slick, alternative jerseys.

Cool, OSU is still a middle of the road B1G school.

First, people in glass houses sholdn't throw stones. Michigan isn't even the top rated school in the Big10 (that honor goes to Northwestern), and its national ranking of 28th is not particularly impressive. There are many people who attended much more prestigious institutions who see Michigan as just another Big10 football/basketball factory. The degree of pride UM alumni take in the academic reputation of their alma mater is grosssly disproportionate to the actual prestige the univeristy has.
Second, you are simply willfully ignorant about the uniqueness of the Ohio State Real Life Wednesday program, and the number of 4* and 5* recruits who have chosen OSU over the last few years because of it. Five minutes skimming articles from a simple Google search would validate Scarlatina's observations for any reasonable person.

When Ohio State is ranked higher than Michigan you can talk shit. Until then, STFU. Now run along back to 11warriors troll.
February 6th, 2018 at 8:46 PM ^
Why would I care where OSU is rated academically? It's just a football factory to me. It's not like I attended school there or anything.
I graduated from The University of Chicago, currently ranked #3. In fairness, when I graduated it was down maybe as low as #5 or #6. If I wanted to talk shit about your alma mater, I'd have at least as much grounds for doing so as you do for talking trash about OSU.
But UM is a perfectly fine university, and it would be rude to talk bad about it on a website devoted to one of their teams. I'm not trashing UM; I'm merely pointing out that it's silly for you to throw shade at OSU as if you're Harvard or something.
February 6th, 2018 at 11:33 PM ^
But I’m confused on why you are here. Trashing the education at UM is laughable. If you aren’t an OSU grad, are you just really bored or something?
February 7th, 2018 at 12:57 AM ^
What does being hired for a job have to do with a college's rating? I'm genuinely confused. Not once in four years of undergraduate life did I pause for even a single moment to worry about what I'd do for a living some day. I was there for an education, not as a job training program or vocational school.
And you're willfully misreading what I have wrote. I have not trashed UM's education. I have merely said that it's not so amazing that it justifies sneering at decent state university like OSU. UM is a very good university, but it's not so great or so much better that you have any reason to make fun of someone who decides that they can get a reasonably comparable one at OSU if they take advantage of all the extra support and opportunites available to football players there.
While I am not an OSU grad, I grew up in Columbus, mostly on or around campus, and am a fan of the football team. That does not entail that I hate UM, and it doesn't change the fact that before Brian failed his morale check, he was one of funniest and most erudite college football writers around. It doesn't change the fact that for most of this site's existence, it's been among the best places to read and discuss college football in general, and Big 10 football in particular.

Aren’t you just a delight? This display of class and grace and humble erudition has been great, really, thank you for stopping by to bless us with your contribution. And truly, it was just splendidly generous of you to flop the sweaty pimpled dick that is your insecurity on the table while you were here.

Resume development? Lol, I hadn't done my research that well on this, sorry. Watching two hours of TED talks a week for the team would probably better prepare them for life.
The more I'm reading into the OSU insider's reasons for why NPF is going buckeye, the more I think they just don't understand that both he and his mom are SUPER polite. Very nice things to say about everything, every visit, every interview, about all their other visits, and that yes, the real life wednesdays was probably a surprising thing that his mother did not expect and was pleasantly surprised over. However, while the insiders are taking this to mean its OSU, I take it to mean that life development outside of football is actually something of importance for this family. I give Michigan an 18% chance.

Who's out there that can make a splash on the recruiting trail at that position?

You gotta figure no big signings. I doubt it changes until we show we can field an offense that isn't hovering at 100th in the nation or worse...

Recruits are starting to care less and less about historic bluebloods, and players of decades past. They want to see what the program has done recently.
As most people have painfully pointed out, Michigan's O-lines have largely been subpar for the last 4-5 years. The last notable OT from Michigan is Titans' Taylor Lewan, and before him was Jake Long 6 years prior. On the other hand, Ohio State has been consistently sending NFL starters to the league for the last 4-5 years: Taylor Decker, Jack Mewhort, Andrew Norwell, Corey Linsley, Pat Elflein and potentially Billy Price.

But history man!!! What kid doesn't want to hear about our NC back in 1901-1904?!?!
I completely agree with you. I think we're holding on to the past while other universities are moving forward to the present and future. I believe the mindset of the AD and the big money donors is way out of whack.

An enduring graphic from the Wisconsin game was the salaries of the O lineman coming out of Wiscy. Even if your last name was not Watt it seemed like everyone was getting paid.

If Otis Reese signs with Georgia and Calvin Anderson picks a transfer opportunity in Texas, other than Michael Barrett, Vincent Gray and Ronnie Bell, does Michigan have a chance of gaining any other scholarship recruits in the class of 2018?
Also, does Michigan have room for any more scholarship players? The depth chart shows 85 scholarship players, including Ronnie Bell, but not including Michael Barrett and Vincent Gray. Are there some potential fifth-year players who won't be asked back, or some underclassmen who can be expected to leave after this semester?
