Need Duel in the D advice for this weekend

Submitted by Mr. Elbel on

My wife and I are driving up to Michigan from Virginia this weekend to spend some time with family and take in the UM/MSU hockey game at LCA on Saturday. She doesn't care much about sports (though all things Michigan are rubbing off on her), but one of our first dates was a (non-Michigan) college hockey game and so she bought us tickets for Christmas.

However, it's been at least 10 years since I've been downtown Detroit, and that as a teenager so my experience there is lacking. We're staying with my sister in GR Friday night and heading over to Detroit sometime on Saturday. I got a hotel over in Romulus since that's on our way home anyway.

But I don't really know what's good to do in the area around LCA for the time that we're there. Specifically, where is good to go for dinner that's reasonably priced? I'd love to take her to a good coney place or get some Detroit pizza, but I grew up in Flint, not Detroit, so I have no idea what I'm doing.

Also, is there anything in the area that we should not miss out on? Anything in LCA we ought to see? I'm already planning on taking her by Comerica/Ford field and maybe down by the Joe, just so she can see them.

As far as the game goes, this will be her first Michigan sporting event and my first Michigan hockey game. Especially for a neutral site game like this, what should we expect? I have no idea how rowdy students are nowadays or if many students will even be there. Would love to show her a good crowd but LCA isn't Yost. I'm also not sure how chants and all that go but I'm sure we'll pick up on some of that as the game goes on.

Of course, I'm doing my own research as much as I can, but I trust mgoposters way more than I do the rest of the internet. Thanks for any information you can give us. Go Blue!

Can't go wrong with Townhouse. Wright and Co, Seldent Standard, Prime and Proper, Joe Muer, The Caucus Club. Good food, bit on the pricier side.

Decently priced would be Jolly Pumpkin, Grand Trunk Pub and Cornerstone (latter two are closer).

If you like Dive Bars, I recommend Checkers. Can't go wrong with Burgers, Cheese curds and deviled eggs (seriously). Sweetwaters is good too, get the wings there.

For Brunch I'd say Dime Store, or Bobcat Bonnie's (this is further from LCA)

If you like Sushi, go with Maru.

When we go to greek town I always park at the Greek Orthodox church. It's usually $5 or $10. Then we'll ride the shuttle from the Old Shillelagh. But I usually bring 75 in.

I have stayed recently at the MGM and the Doubletree and both were very good. It was easy to either walk places or get an Uber. Doubletree is close to Campus Martius I believe.
IMO that is the way to experience Detroit instead of heading to the soulless suburbs and an airport hotel.
Caveat: can be pricey and parking ain’t cheap. Cheaters tip: park at a casino ramp for free and Uber to hotel.

Yeah we couldn't afford a downtown hotel this time around. Maybe next time. I'd love to take the whole family to a game at Comerica sometime so maybe we'll get a downtown hotel for that. Just don't have the money right now. Hence why we're getting an airport hotel and driving 12+ hours there and back for a 3 day trip.

If you're in town for just the evening, there's more than enough to do/see downtown.  I don't recommend Mexicantown or New Center.  Use the Qline to traverse Woodward to downtown.

Bakersfield, Grey Ghost, Vertical (my favorite), Wright & Co., Hudson Cafe, the Whitney, Chartreuse, DIA Cafe, Parc, Townhouse, Caucus Club.

These places may be very busy, so consider a reservation if you have kids.  Enjoy!

Everyone is wrong about no Detroit style pizza downtown. There is Niki's in Greektown next to Taco Loco on Beaubien, basically kitty corner from the casino. It's a fine version of Detroit style "square" pizza. They have slices too, but they wrap them in foil & put them in a warmer so they're kind of soggy, but still taste good. You should order a whole pizza instead to get the crispy crust.

Thanks everyone for your input. My wife and I will look through everything and figure out what we want to do. Thanks especially to SRK for your thoughts on the actual game.
