Notre Dame DC Elko to Texas A&M

Submitted by BlueAggie on

Per TexAgs, A&M is going to hire Mike Elko to be their next DC.  Seems good for Michigan, ND was much improved on defense in their one season under Elko.

I saw Elko's name start to percolate on A&M message boards a couple of days ago.  A&M made a massive offer to Aranda and got rejected last night.  I suspect that they were talking behind the scenes with agents of both and cut the offer to Elko late last night or this morning.  Based on the numbers around Aranda, it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Elko sign for $2MM+.  That seems nuts to me, but A&M dramatically increased in size through the 80's and 90's.  Those alums are beginning to enter peak giving years now.  The PUF means that A&M doesn't really fundraise for endowment, so there's lots of resources available for athletics.

I'm honestly not sure how much better OSU's defense can get. They were pretty damn good this year even without him. I'll admit I've never played or coached a game, but is he going to really make them that much better?  Aside from their secondary in the beginning of the season, they really didn't have any weaknesses.

That guy was pretty solid. Glad we're not rolling out a new starter (or Peters) against him, at night, in front of 80,000 hammered Domers (and people who love Notre Dame because their 4th cousin went there which is 97% of their fan base)

I'm surprised that Notre Dame let him go.  They are not a MAC school, they have big cash to throw around too.

Kelly must be as big an asshole behind the scenes as he is on the field.

If LSU just threw down $2.5 million/year to keep Texas A&M away from Dave Aranda, it wouldn't be far-fetch to say they probably offered Elko close to $2 million/year.

No idea what Elko currently makes at Notre Dame, but I think most school would be hesitant to match that for a DC. Especially considering the $1 million ceiling for asst. coaches wasn't broken that long ago, and only 15 coaches were paid above that this past season.
