Are Stanford, USC and Texas all Bad at Football?

Submitted by UMBSnMBA on

USC struggles against WMU, beats Stanford and edges Texas.  Stanford beats Rice loses to USC and loses to SDSU (!).  Texas loses to Maryland (!), beats San Jose State and gets beaten by USC.

So within the 3 teams we have a couple of big loses, some close wins against each other and blowouts against some teams best characterized as NPC's.  Anybody with a pulse outside of this troika has given them a game or beaten them.

The narrative is that they are all good or improving.  Put on a different set of lenses and they are all bad and struggling.  I guess that this is why we play the games.

Go Blue.

If Texas is a good team, then Maryland is now a top 10 team. The road trip to Maryland may be one of our toughest road games, along with Purdue, Indiana, PSU and WI.

If USC and Texas are both bad then we are really bad. Some of the passes those QBs were making last night Speight couldn't dream of making the way he's playing right now.

Their defenses looked good too though is the thing. Both were getting pressure all night and laying the wood. The QBs were just threading the needle consistently in the second half and overtimes. When you're playing against good defenses you need to have star performances on offense, which is exactly what they both had. If we went up against Clemson or Alabama, based on what I've seen, they'd be much more likely to score on our great defense than we would be to score on their great defenses. When you're talking college football playoff, you've got to be able to get it done on both sides of the ball.

I know TX has a stable of qbs we'd love to have. USC has one-and the interceptions do make him look iffy-that will, more-than-likely, be the no. 1 pick in next year's draft. Stanford I haven't seen yet, but imagine they have a decent roster to work with.

I do know USC and TX both do not have the talent they've had in the past. I'm speaking of sheer numbers and at a few key positions. But that's easy to understand, given that both use to roster up like Bama on an annual basis. As stated, 3 games small sample size. But yes, they could all be bad or they could all be good.

Have not watched too much of usc but Stanford's defense is bad. They got pushed around last night and when sd passed there were multiple plays where a defender had his back to the QB in zone! And a few were multiple players had their backs to the QB in zone!!!

and have no problem falling in the poll considering the offense's struggles but is UM really overrated? Outside of the top 3 (top 2 really) there are no other teams that have really played with any kind of consistency. Along with that, a couple of the teams ahead of UM really haven't played a solid schedule.

With that said, I would think UM is likely rated about where they should be.

Who the hell would beat us that is currently ranked below us? Much less be able to move the ball on regular basis against our defense. No team ranked behind us has destroyed a top 25 team on a neutral field... Most of you are just completely discounting our win against Florida.

that game was a very well played game, with both teams making great catches in tight coverage, and great plays.  Darnold's ability to see the field is pretty special, and he does not get much protection.  As often happens in college football, both teams were a lttle flat after that big  game.  Texas was more ready to play USC than vice versa, and, although I was in bed before the end of SDSU's win over Stanford last night, from what I read about that game and in talking to other people this morning, Stanford was a little flat and got out schemed.  Their time of possession was 19 minutes.  Someone on the blog pointed out last night Shaw opted to kick a field goal in second half with a 4 & 1.  You have one of the best running backs in college football and you kick a field goal in a game where SDSU has nothing to lose,  then you are inviting trouble.  Even with Love, who ran for 184 yds. on 13 carries last night, and Chryst, who is at least an above average college qb, if not a really good one, you score the same amount of points at SDSU as U.C. Davis did a couple of weeks ago.  Wow.  Wrap your head around that one.   College football is amazing and sometimes unpredictable.

Will be interesting to see what SDSU does at Air Force next week.
