OT: Great Forgotten Rock Guitarists
It's hot. It's (almost) summer. Not much going on in the "on topic" world so...
Was savoring some Elmer T. Lee with my bourbon drinking buddy and we started talking forgotten rock guitarists. My selection was the late, great and very much forgotten Toy Caldwell. Played with Marshall Tucker in the 70's. Check out his work on the song "Ramblin."
And your selection is?
Got a guy on our fishing pro staff who sets up displays for liquor stores. Got a bottle of Elmer and tons of other good stuff. He hooks me up. Even a bottle of Van Winkle
Gary Moore
Dweezil Zappa
For my money, people underrate/forget Frank Zappa, as far as great guitarists go.
Dweezil's remake of his dads song is a must listen. There are quite a few artists out there whose career was jumpstarted by Frank, a very talented musician.
Wayne Kramer
Next time you hear SNA in the stadium, pause for a moment in recollection of the fact that Meg White was married to Jackson Smith, son of Fred "Sonic" Smith of the MC5 and herself, Patti Smith.
I thought about mentioning him, but I guess I don't really consider him forgotten. Check out the version of "Looking At You" from this same show for more classic Wayne.

Only a week old, he has some remastered stuff, including Looking At You"
I agree on not forgotten, absolutely, but then Jeff Beck is mentioned so I'm guessing anyone can be mentioned.
See above
Not really a rock guy, but nobody plays quite like him.
Kinda classified as new age...but could do amazing things with a guitar and even had his own unique two-handed picking technique.
Hedges was amazing to see live. Died tragically in a car accident in 1997.
James Burton ..... Robin Trower .... Gary Moore.... Legends all ! But very much unknown to the masses :(
More of a jazz player, but with a rock sound. One of the few guitarists Van Halen looked up to. Recently passed, RIP.
Mick Ronson. Never get's much attention, but he played with both Bowie and Ian Hunter and he always had a really good tone.
From the original King Crimson, through David Bowie's Heroes, and way beyond....
Randy Rhodes or Vivian Campbell who were (are) great electric guitar players.
Supposedly Eric Clapton was asked what it was like to be the world's greatest guitar player and he responded "I don't know, you should go ask Prince"
I know several people that think his talent on guitar was unparralled.
"Imagine if John Lennon wrote twice as much music, wrote number one hits for other artists, could play every instrument on the record, and do it all wearing 6 inch platform heels. That's Prince."
You can find the same quote with Jimi Hendrix and Rory Gallagher as the subjects.

picked every note, never cheated.
When he wasn't a drunken mess, he played a mean guitar.
That he could. And it wouldn't be a complete Reps thread without offering up the Husker counterpart - Bob Mould - still plays amazing guitar.
Prince, Lindsey Buckingham, Beck, Santana, yes, have not seen mentioned:
B.B. King
Denny Laine
Harrison, Lennon, McCartney
Mick Taylor
Keith Richards
Andy Summers
Carl Wilson
Chuck Berry
Joni Mitchell
Muddy Waters
Neil Young
Jimmy Page
Eric Clapton
Randy Bachman
Robby Krieger
Buddy Holly
Curtis Mayfield
John 5 is incredible. His work with Rob Zombie doesn't do him justice. His solo albums are indescribable. He also does a lot of session work in all different genres. Crazy talent that's always pushing himself.
- Amos Garrett
- Jesse Ed Davis
- John Hall
