Refs in this sport are a disgrace

We might complain about big ten football refs, but my god. Refs in college basketball continually just make shit up as they go or what looks like a foul. Truely the most poorly officiated sport and this whole tournament has been a disgrace.

MLB ought to have the best because its umpires are career professionals. The problem with NCAA basketball refereeeing is that the officials don't work together until they meet for a specific game and so they get caught up in proving themselves to their peers and the NCAA at large, both assignors and the power structure.

I don't watch the NBA so I can't judge them. But they call a different game anyway because pro and college basketball are lightyears apart in terms of the game and what is allowed. College basketball is a purer game and calls are based on team and coach reps rather than individual advantage-disadvantage

The NFL is about to become a career profession for officials. But until they make pay commensurate with the sport's popularity and accountability, the results will always be challenged based on perspectve, whether legitimate or not.

I won't defend the refs, but reffing in a contact sport where some contact is OK and some contact is not is difficult. Also, there's a reason we don't see games telecast at eye level (didn't they try that last year for a Michigan game and it was comically awful). Are they the worst? Some. The first Minnesota game stands out as truly awful officiating - maybe even intentionally awful. But I think football gives awful refs more cover because there are more players, there's more contact and so much goes on away from the ball. In general, the officiating at the Horseshoe last November makes the missed goaltending call on Gonzaga and all the other crappy calls we've seen this weekend look like child's play. A few years ago, I did a study on discretionary calls (holding, illegal contact, pass interference, mostly) in the NFL, and the variance between crews was astonishing.

and football reffing looks super hard to me, as well.

I've reffed basketball and found it very challenging.

I've umped a lot of softball/baseball and you really, really suck at your job if you ever miss the call at first base or tag plays at any base, really.

With the above said about football and basketball, the refs in this tournament have been extraordinarily bad. It's really stood out. I haven't seen a tournament with this many egregiously blown calls in years in many many years. I actually don't know if I've ever seen this many blown calls in the first two rounds.

I'm so glad they pulled it out today .  That officiating was horrendous.  But, it was notable better from about the 15:00 minute mark of the 2nd haf towards the end.  I'm not saying that cuz Michigan came back and then pulled away in that time frame but it was noticeable how few calls they made in that span.  Refs either realized how bad they were doing up to that point and tightened up or the players on the court adjusted to how they were calling it.  But it was really noticeable.  I was glad that happened because they let the teams decide it - and Michigan turned out to be the better team.
