Official on Michigan's sideline might have been in Ohio officials HOF

Submitted by Magnus on

Jim Harbaugh said in his postgame comments that the referee on Michigan's sideline told him that he officiates basketball, too, and Harbaugh's antics would have been a technical in basketball. Here's an interesting tweet about who that official could potentially be:

If it is indeed that guy, he was elected to the Ohio High School Athletic Association Officials Hall of Fame earlier this year for his work in both football and basketball. He's a native of Cincinnati, and the ceremony for the HOF was held in . . . Columbus.

I can't help thinking this is a bit of a conflict of interest.

I have a feeling you're the type of guy that could watch the police shoot someone for jaywalking and then say "well, he could have used the crosswalk." .... I mean yes, obviously Michigan didn't play perfectly which ideally you would like to play perfectly but that doesn't negate the egregiously one-sided officiating that had a direct outcome on the game.

This article lays out about a half dozen calls/no calls that were controversial.  But author misses the point.  All of them were toss up calls and ALL of them broke for OSU.  Flip a coin 6 times, chances of getting heads each time is 1/64.  The chances that M were not being screwed by the fucking refs is the same.

Both teams made mistakes, we get and accept that.  But one team has a little something extra to work with.

Tom Hofmann, long time baseball coach at GRCC, and Michigan fan, reffed in the B1G for many years, football and basketball. He was often on the M sideline getting an earful from Bo & Lloyd.

Point being, it probably happens more than we know. Disclosure is important and maybe refs should "recuse" themselves but the opportunity to call this type of game is hard to turn down.

That said, the B1G should've nixed this. I like the idea of using another conferences' officials. Just like bowl games to some degree.

I mean, I know high school officials have to recuse themselves from reffing games if their kid even goes to the high school. On a much grander scale, you would think there would be even more restrictions. IMO, nobody from Ohio or Michigan should be reffing this game. There are plenty of other conferences or states to pull from.
