Gameday Traditions

Submitted by canzior on

My new wife has been adopted as a Michigan fan, and we are starting a family.  I became a Michigan fan being from Detroit, and an Uncle who played high school ball with a couple guys on the 89 team.  He liked both UM and MSU though, while I stuck with UM.  I grew up in the DC area, so not a lot of Michigan fan-dom in my life.  I am curious if anyone has any awesome gameday traditions that they have/had with parents, aunts/uncles, children, or friends that they wouldn't mind sharing.

Also of note: I spoke with a friend about PSU/OSU (he was at the game, speaking with the coaches before the game)...Penn State's gameplan going into the game was to mimic Wisconsin's defensive scheme, and put their starters on special teams to gain an advantage.

exceptions.  if i am coaching football that saturday and/or any of the sons are playing we will miss parts or rarely all of the michigan game.  occasionally we'll hunt during some of the game,  otherwise all actiities are planned to cease before, break during, or start after the game.  all farm chores, all work, all exercise, meals, etc.

as it relates to inculcating the family, my mgowife became a fan 20+ yrs ago while dating.  all of our mgochildren are big fans.  by osmosis, attending games with me, hearing about college, playing at michigan, family generations attending michigan, meeting my friends, and all the other things of life, my entire family is a michigan family.

If I'm going to the game I try to get to the tailgate spot about 3 hours before game time. In that time I usually drink right around 11 beers. Piss about 6 times. Then I walk to the game about 15 mintues before kick. I usually miss the kick-off.

If I'm at home in Kentucky I wake up when I normally do around 8:30AM. I have a coffee.  I try to get some stuff done around the house. Maybe clean up the kitchen a bit. Walk the dogs. If the game is on a national channel like ABC/NBC/CBS or FOX I will crack a beer around noon. If it's a 3:30 start I'm usually mch more drunk than I should be by the time the game is over.  If the game is not on one of those channels, well then I usually go to BW3 or some local establishment and watch the game and have a couple beers and spend way too much money.

No tradition. Just typical everyday life.

Blast the old MMB CD throughout the house in the morning.

We also have a 7' inflatable M football player named Tacopants that we blow up for game days and the kids give him a high five every time M scores.

When my kids were little, we lived just southwest of the stadium. To get to games, we would walk from our house, through the Pioneer Woods, and through the PiHi parking lot.

Each season, the path would start out lush, and green. The colors would slowly change as Fall descended. By the final game of the season, the leaves were all on the ground, and you knew that winter was just around the corner.

Now, we live on the other side of town. But, I still drive back and park in the old neighborhood, so we can walk through the woods to get to the game. Early in the season midway thorugh the woods, my son, out of nowhere, said: "I forget how green this starts out."

It's a little thing, but it's an important thing.

For the Illinois game, we were doing the double-header of football and hockey, so we decided to park on campus instead so that the walk back from hockey would not be so far. Had lunch at Amer's, and walked down State to the game. His observation? "This is a really different pre-game experience."

Maybe we'll switch to campus/State Street from now on, but I don't think so. It's not "our" game that way.

I've been watching games with my dad, brother and sometimes uncle for years now.  I usually make it to one game a year three out of every four years.

Its not much of a tradition , but I get a store bought , cheap pizza.

Add my own toppings to it, since there isnt shit on it.  Cover it with  ham, pepperoni  , bacon . Top it  with extra cheese . I cook it so the cheese has a bit of a crust to it  .

I  try to cook it and have it ready for kick off .
