UM/ND 2018/2019 Contract Details

Submitted by Hab on

In the tradition of scooping WD, MLive is reporting the details of Michigan's new agreement with ND.

Among other interesting bits, it is confirmed that we are away in September 2018 and home in October 2019.

Cue the apocalypse.  Commence the weeping and gnashing of teeth.  We are away to ND, MSU, and OSU in 2018 and home to all three in 2019.

"If Michigan or Notre Dame should decide to back out of one or both games -- not exactly an unheard of event, at this point -- the school that cancels will have to pay the other $150,000 if it's done two years out, $500,000 if done between between one-to-two years out, and $1 million if it's done one year out." WTF this is unbelievable. What's to stop notre dame from screwing us AGAIN and cancelling the eve of the 2018 game? $500k ain't shit. I gave Manuel an F before reading the details. This is truly "fire him immediately" material. Here is the man who is gonna rectify the home/away imbalance vs rivals? And to think we gave up an SEC West opponent we never play for this Or hell, notre dame could just convince the ACC to schedule a 6th game and feign innocence: "The contract, obtained Friday by MLive via a Freedom of Information Act request, also allows Notre Dame to cancel the series with no buyout if the school enters into a deal requiring it to pay more than five games as part of a conference affiliation"

As part of the agreement, the Big Ten will appoint officials for Michigan's home game, while "an athletic conference designated by Notre Dame" will appoint officials for the game in South Bend.

Why do I not really like the idea of Notre Dame being able to sort of screen officials for the games in South Bend? There has to be a deep, historical reason that this unsettles me.

We went 15-15-1 during that time. The first and last were both at ND.

We are restarting at ND. MSU also owes us a home game

if that ever gets straightened out with B10.

JH says road wins make men. I'd still prefer some home cooking.

46 of the first 50 games (games played prior to 1958; MSU becoming a full member in the Big Ten in 1953) were played in Ann Arbor. Then from 1958-1966 it alternated between East Lansing (1958) and Ann Arbor, but in both 1967 and 1968 the games were played in Ann Arbor. Back to alternating sites until 2013 and 2014 when the back-to-back games in East Lansing occurred. So, since (and including) the 1957 game played in Ann Arbor, there will be an equal number of games played at the 2 sites once the game is played this year in EL. Of the 108 games played all-time between the Michigan and MSU, 79 games have been played in Ann Arbor and 29 have been played in East Lansing. So no, I don't really think MSU "owes" us a home game. If Michigan is going to have the home schedule have either OSU or MSU home and the other away, Michigan will likely have to relent and play in East Lansing twice in a row again.

The key to this is, it was before they were in the Big Ten. They were a small school similar to any other non conference team who would only travel to Ann Arbor. They made a lot more money by playing in the Big House, so it's not like we were forcing them. Neither school really owes anything as far as scheduling. If we really want to get it fixed, which by the way would benefit both schools, play a game at Ford Field one year between the switch and call it a day. It could be a great time (once) and good for Detroit.
