“It appears that the selfish interests of a few schools and conferences prevailed over the best interests of future potential student-athletes,” WSU coach Mike Leach said in a text message to the Seattle Times. “The mission of universities and athletic programs should be to provide future student-athletes with exposure to opportunities, not to limit them. It appears to me that some universities and conferences are willing to sacrifice the interests of potential student-athletes for no better reasons than to selfishly monopolize their recruiting bases.

“I will be fascinated to hear any legitimate reasoning behind this ruling.”

“Taking away satellite camps eliminates an opportunity for quality (student-athletes) to be trained, seen and advised by college coaches,” WSU linebackers coach Ken Wilson tweeted on Friday.

It also eliminates the opportunity for the student to go to places perhaps closer to home and still be seen by the programs that they might be interested in or have offers from, but then this is a ruling from an organization that has no track record of giving a shit about the people for which they supposedly exist to advocate.

The only justification for banning this is because other coaches don't want to deal with what Harbaugh is doing.

The NCAA is run by knee-jerk reaction and perception. Harbaugh has been doing offseason camps and training since before he left the NFL. It's only now, because he's the coach at Michigan, with a national reputation and a lightening rod for media attention, that this issue is worth regulating. And who is rewarded by this action, those who fear they might be overtaken in the recruiting marketplace.

The fact is that Harbaugh has grown the game by growing the skill level of those he teaches. And it matters not what his aims are, because the lesser lights will never want  to try and match his energy or dedication. So, they are left with trying to prevent him from his pursuit of passion by regulatory control.

Harbaugh has mentioned the untapped tallent of coaching at the high school level.  These camps got jobs for coaches as much as offers for players.  I am excited about all the new coaches coming up from HS on the staff.
