Bracketology 3/6: Yeah.

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

ESPN has us as the 4th team out after being the last team in before the game yesterday.

CBS is more optimistic in having us as the first team out. Bracket Matrix says so, as well.

DRatings is even more optimistic, having us as the last team IN the tournament.

Need to win the first game in the B1G Tournament and hope for other bubble teams to lose.

Hopefully this is going to be a moot point, but the first four out of the NCAA Tournament are automatic 1 seeds in the NIT.

NYC buckets has us as a 1 seed in the NIT with a pretty manageable bracket, actually.

Greggggg Marshall's Shockers laying an egg yesterday shrunk the bubble.

Well, the estimated probabilities over at TeamRankings are - as you would expect - not hopeful:

Make Tournament
Automatic Bid
At Large Bid
22.10% 2.30% 19.90%
Most Likely Seed
Final Four
NCAA Champs
#12 (9.1%) 0.40% 0.00%

Win two in the BTT and I have to think that creeps back to essentially a coin flip on making the tournament, but it seems like they would need to be pretty decisive wins and perhaps you don't make it even then. Right now, the outlook is....yeah, not good and that might be putting it mildly.

0% chance of winning it all. That's just another reason to not even bother with the Big Dance. I feel like an undeserving trip to the NCAAs only accomplishes one thing -- taking some of the pressure off of Beilein. I'd rather got to the NIT, hopefully play a few more games/practices, and have Beilein feel the pressure all offseason. Changes need to be made -- starting with his approach to recruiting, development of bigs, and a renewed emphasis on defense. If he can do any of those things himself, then find some assistants that can. If he can do it himself or find assistants that can, then it's time to talk coaching change.

For those who will be watching intently on Selection Sunday to learn the post-season fate of the Michigan men’s basketball team, cbssportss.com provides “RPI Team Comparisons” to use when comparing Michigan to other NCAA Tournament “bubble teams.” LINK

Is winning the next two. Beating Northwestern and Indiana would be enough.

But, they've shown absolutely 0 to point to them beating a good team essentially on the road.

We started out sluggish and trailed at halftime and that was a home game.  Maybe we'll play with some urgency for two games and get off the bubble.

I'm probably being a homer by saying this, but I think we have enough talent to beat anyone in the conference.  It would take us committing under 10 turnovers and eliminating the five minute scoring droughts, but it's not impossible.

Beilein' refusal to play two bigs together when having 5 bigs on scholarship is killing us ! Also , not talking to kids because his rule on waiting to jr year is a joke

I thought I saw them on the court together againste Wisconsin.  Maybe I was wrong.  I always wondered why those two never played together more.  Donnal shoots well enough to help space the floor as a stretch 4 and create matchup problems.

It's probably a terrible comparison but MSU was tough to play against when Adrien Payne could stretch the floor at the 4.  It opened up the middle for Nix and provided two big bodies to bang on the glass.

just to give the kids the experience, and also for purposes of recruiting.

That being said, I don't think this is a tournament team.  With what we have left, we are bereft a go to scoring option, and we just don't have the leadership and poise on the floor that provides the impetus for a comeback when we struggle.

I get so frustrated watching us fold the tent we fall behind early.  I don't think this team yet has the mental toughness the weather a storm.  I haven't seen it yet, and I don't know if it will happen this year.

Best option for us is to beat NW, then at least play a tight game against IU.  If we beat IU, I think we can rest easy on Sunday.  Lose to IU, and we might be waiting for the NIT brackets to get released.

Overall, not getting an NCAA bid is a step backward, despite the personnel losses.  A top program should have enough depth on hand to at least make the tournament.
