Oregon pays their bet after losing football wars to the state of Michigan

"GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Remember when KGW in Portland made a bet with WZZM over a football war between the state of Michigan and the state of Oregon?

Well Michigan State edged out Oregon and the Michigan Wolverines thumped Oregon State. After that, it had been a few days and we hadn't heard from them. We were wondering if they'd make good on their bet.

Thursday they finally got back to us and let us know their "awesome" Oregon beer was on its way. In the meantime, it was fun to watch those anchors eat their words, and all the nasty things they said about our state, our beer and the Big Ten.

Cheers, KGW!"

I'm sure Oregon is quite good and I hope to try some someday, but more doesn't necessarily mean better.

I'll stack Michigan up to them any day.  Larger craft breweries, Bell's, Founder's, Short's all the way down to the smaller ones, Jolly Pumpkin/North Peak (sour revolution), Blackrock's (Marquette), Blue Cow (Big Rapids), Perrin, to name just a few.

Of course this thread devolves into a "whose beer is better" thread. I don't have a stake in this, but I will say that both states definitely represent well nationally. We're probably talking about two of the best beer states in the country.

Regardless, shouldn't we be most happy that Michigan won the bet.

Ninkasi is based here in Eugene. It's okay, not great. Oregon IPAs are overrated IMO. It's as if they try to break the IBU scale with every craft beer innovation.

Now a Willamette Valley pinot noir? World class.

I feel like Ninkasi is the brewery you drink when you first get to Oregon, and you think it is amazing. Then you start trying the other breweries in the state and you realize that all of Ninkasi's beers - with perhaps Maiden the Shade being an outlier - taste roughly the same. I can't remember the last time I've had Total Domination.

Agree with you on the wine front, too.

You will suffer humiliation when the craft brewery from my area is ranked by internet beer advocates above the craft brewery in your area.

 Accept your fate.

Missed the beer thread earlier, and don't care if it's from Oregon or Michigan or anywhere else, but does anyone have a good rec for a hefeweizen that's available either nationally or in the south?

One can argue either way, Michigan or Oregon has better beer.  It's all an opinion when it comes to taste.  But Oregon does have a lot of microbrews per capita.

I love craft beer, but some people take it too far.  It's almost like they defend more experimental breweries at the expense of quality.  For my money, Founders does both extremely well and Bell's used to be more experimental, but I think they have one beer that I don't like (maybe two) in their whole lineup.  I know there are a lot of fringe breweries that only sell locally that are amazing (3 Floyds is one of my favs in spite of being in the middle of a boring manufacturing town), but to have quality on the scale that Founders and Bell's do is almost unheard of.

I'll leave the beer arguments to everyone else and just say that I grew up listening to KGW.  Still have the KGW window sticker, in fact.  Great station.  Back in the day, great deejays, great music.  My teenage self hung on the American Top 40 broadcast on Sundays.  Glad to see they're still hanging in there.
