Empty seats

Submitted by Autostocks on

Was disappointed to see all the empty seats at the top of the northwest corner of the stadium Saturday, not just at the beginning of the game, but throughout the game.  Are those just unsold tickets?  Was it due to the noon start?  I don't get it, if you can't get excited about the home opener, on a beautiful Saturday morning, in Harbaugh's home debut, against a Power 5 conference opponent, what will it take?

[Edit: Topic obviously touched a nerve, judging by the negs.  Thanks for the reasoned responses.  Not sure I buy the compaction theory.  Just look at some of the photos from the UTL games and the stadium is full to the brim.  If compaction is the answer, then why don't we see that impact at all games?]

Don't worry about the negs. We have a lot of people making excuses about this- because no way could this still be an issue with Hackett and Harbaugh on board!

The more we win, the more casual student fans will go. This may shock some of you, but there are students who never attend a single football game. Give it time and stop being so damn old and grumpy

Michigan fans need to bring it even more.  I read this on Oregonlive written by an Oregon reporter who went to both games on Saturday:

"Inside the (Spartan) stadium it is quite the atmosphere, more intimidating than Michigan, a feeling of unhinged energy that ranges somewhere from entering a gladiator pit to a five-keg party." "It is Autzen Stadium on steroids...."

or this from Phil Knight:  Phil Knight reportedly told MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis that it was the best football event -college or pro- that he had ever been to.

It's my dream to attend a UM game. I would really like to attend one this season. I notice that there are a lot of tickets for sale on "StubHub." My question is, is StubHub a trustworthy website? I would be devastated to purchase tickets then drive 7 hours to The Big House only to find out my tickets are fake or not accepted for some reason or another.

So youre telling me that ppl are mad bc 10% of the student section appeared not to have shown up for the first home game, at noon, after 7-8 years of a shit product and 3-4 years of being taken for granted?
I'm shocked.

My opinion is this.

Students (and everyone else) go to the game partly to socialize with their friends.  This is why general admission seeting didn't work.  The other thing that doesn't work is loud, piped in stadium music.  It doesn't help that the band is miced now too.

Years ago, before the piped in music. many more people including students showed up early to socialize and stayed throughout the game.  Now you can't even here yourself think.  Students like the music to a point, but thunderstruck over and over again gets old.

I'm sure the stadium will fill up. Looks as if 7 years of not so great football has taken its toll! I wish I lived in Michigan. I would buy season tickets now while they're available! It may be hard to get a ticket in a few years!

I think they need to shrink the student section if they don't want to support the team.. I've heard the whole "lunch conflict" bs, get you some pbj and get to the bighouse.
