MGoBlog Heisman: And the Winner is....

Submitted by Vuginovic on
Due to the amount of ballots received and the variety of candidates I took the 3 names listed the most times in the top 3 and counted their ballots. Thus the winner is..........Ndamukong Suh! In Second was Toby Gerhart and taking third was Mark Ingram. Here are the results. Toby Gerhart: 1st- 14 2nd- 20 3rd- 6 4th- 3 5th- 0 Ndamukong Suh 1st- 26 2nd- 17 3rd- 1 4th-0 5th- 1 Mark Ingram 1st- 3 2nd- 3 3rd- 19 4th- 7 5th- 7 The real 2009 Heisman winner was Mark Ingram. In the 2009 MGoBlog Heisman Mark Ingram got 3rd place.

The Deadspin article (I know, I know...) about Suh's chances was really compelling for me. A lot of the Suh supporters are bashing position bias in favor or 'recency bias.' We can all knock Ingram for the Auburn game, but I can't knock Suh for his weakest game, because I have no idea which one it is. For all I (and many others) know, he might have completely sucked for a couple games in a row leading up to the title game. A lot of his support is just from one dominant performance, though it was admittedly awesome. That said, I'm glad he was taken seriously by as many people as he was, so voters open up to candidates like that in the future. http://deadspin.com/5424613/ndamukong-suh-gives-people-a-reason-to-care…

Sadly I turned in my Mgoballot after week 3. #1. Tate Forcier - QB -Michigan #2. Michael Floyd - WR - ND #3. Colt McCoy - QB - Texas #4. Dez Bryant - WR -OK State #5. Todd Reesing - QB - Kansas In retrospect, I should have waited until midseason, at least.

Mark Ingram winning was a joke. The voters basically said, "I'm going to pick the best player from the best team. The best team is Alabama, so I guess I'll pick Mark Ingram." Also, Chris Fowler said that 6% of the votes came in before the last games were played. Those 6% of votes should be disqualified. It's ridiculous that people are allowed to vote on who had the best season BEFORE THE SEASON IS OVER.

...it stands to reason that Ingram would've received even more votes since he had a great game against the top ranked defense in the nation. Furthermore, Ingram had one of, if not the, highest yards per carry averages in the nation going against SEC defenses. I personally would've put him 4th amongst the finalists behind Kong, Gerhart, and McCoy, but there is validity to his selection.

The 6% thing is a separate issue from the Ingram selection. Regardless of who won/would win, voters shouldn't be able to submit their votes before the final games are played. Any votes received before then should be thrown in the trash. What if Ingram ended up with -1 yard rushing on 15 carries while Colt McCoy threw for 500 yards and 6 TDs?

I started crying when he thanked his father. It was really emotional. I read that his father failed to show up last year in Kentucky for an almost eight year federal prison sentence (on bank fraud and money laundering charges.) He somehow ended up in New York at a private correctional facility and his attorneys were able to hold off his transfer to prison until after football season because this private facility gave him more freedom to get to a television on Saturdays and watch his son play. A strong argument could be made for each of the top three walking away with the Heisman, but I'm so happy Ingram won.
