Wayyyy OB I mean OT--MGoGolfers

Submitted by shswhit51 on

Hello fellow MGoGolfers.  So I am planning on buying new golf clubs this weekend.  This is my fourth season playing and I would consider myself an intermediate player.  I feel like my ability to grow as a golfer is capped because of the set of clubs I currently have which I bought as a complete set and are wayyyy too short for my height and poorly made.

I am currently looking at either ping 25's or Calloway Hot shot but obviously I'm going to spend some time trying out as many as I can.

Do any of you have any suggestions of clubs that allow for some forgiveness but can be a nice improvement set?

Thanks!

most places like Maple Hill have Demo days throughout the year. Go to those and hit up every different manufacture at the range on a given day. After a couple of those you will have a good idea of which clubs you like best.

Haven't bought any new clubs in a few years, but for an intermediate player I would advise you to take a look at some lower end TaylorMade irons. IMO TaylorMade can't be beat in terms of an iron game for someone your skill level.

There are lots of good clubs out there.  Go somewhere and try different models.  There is no right answer as personal preference is key.

Second tip-get them fitted for you.  It can make a big difference, even for an intermediate player

Go to demo days or miles of golf where you can try them out. Look into club fitting. There are so many variables, club speed, etc. If you hit the clubs well, they are the ones to get.

Get fit for length, lie angle and shaft flex and try some different models. If possible, go somewhere where you can hit outdoors - I think you'll get a better feel than hitting into a net. Golf Digest does a hotlist each year of new clubs/products and they group by ability - game improvement or advanced. Google it. There are several 2015 clubs in the game improvement category, including Ping, Taylor Made, Callaway, Mizuno and Cobra. Best of luck. Edit: I don't know your price range, so don't feel obligated to buy brand new and/or newest models. They come out with great stuff every year, so you might be able to find some 2014s at a good price, or even used from a reputable shop.

I suggest you give up golf.  It was the best thing I ever did.  Haven't swung a club in 10 years.  More time, more money, less frustration.  Win, win, win.

Picked up fishing, same financial investment but can budget my time a lot more with having little kids and a wife. Tough to justify 4 hours on 18 holes on a speedy day with buddies, but a couple hours wrestling steelhead is just as rewarding in my case. Not for everyone though.

I know up here in Grand Rapids area you can go to Maple Hill and as long as you buy your clubs from them, your fitting is free. They will spend hours with you testing different clubs all within your budget and get you the best set up for your skill and your budget. That's where I went and I've sent 3-4 other people there and have gotten the same feedback. Most of their pro's will also give you a mini-lesson while you're getting fitted.

But if you're not close to GR, get fitted worth every penny. Don't go in with a brand preference. I've always hated Callaway's, and wanted Cleveland's. Sure enough, I walked out of there with Callaway's.

"Wayyyy OB..."    Have you been watching me golf?

Completely agree with the many in this thread who have recommended you get custom fitted.  It can make a dramatic difference.

I'm 5-10 with average arms, so it's not a big deal for me, but if you're pretty tall it can make a huge difference.

Regarding the Calloway Hot Shots.  I carry a few Calloway X-Hot mid irons in my bag because they're crazy long.  Not sure about the new Hot Shots, but if they're anything like mine you'll love the distance but hate the inconsistency.

Hard to hit a green with a 7 iron that I've hit anywhere from 145 to 185.  (My Adams 7 was consistently 145-155 before I broke it over my knee and threw it in the lake on #11 at Riverdale Knolls.)

Good luck!

Speaking as a PGA professional, the fitting process is very important. You need to figure out length of the clubs, launch angles, spin rates, loft and lie, grip size, and set makeup. My recommendation would be to go the the nearest PGA professional and have him/her go through the whole process. Every golfer is so different it's impossible to write down. Personally Callaway clubs for MY game but it's not the best for everyone.

It doesn't have to be at a hoity-toity place either. Golfsmith stores have the video gear / simulation facilities, a big enough selection, and typically knowledgable enough pros to make sure you get fit with the set that best suits your needs. I went there for a driver fitting last year, and I came out with a clearance-sale driver from last year's model set that the pro adjusted for me in the store 'cause I hit it the best based on my mechanics. The guy could have easily pushed me into a more expensive club since he knew I was coming in without a budget, but his focus was on matching my swing to the club and making sure the simulation metrics confirmed it. He probably lost out on a couple hundred dollars more in sales on me personally, but because of his help and honesty, I've probably directed 6-7 others to his store and they've made out increased numbers of sales.

I just bought some Taylormade Speedblades on sale for $499.00 at golf galaxy. They had great feel to them, consistent flight and I was hitting them farther than my previous set. I also picked up last years Big Bertha driver on clearance. As you can imagine I'm pretty excited to take them out on the course and see if I made a good decision.

I just got fit for the new Nike Vapor Pro Combos. They're awesome and really forgiving for a "Player's Iron".

The new Nike woods are awesome, as is the new Titleist 915.

Just as important as what club to get is for the stiffness of your shaft. (Too hard not to make that joke). I was playing with a regular flex when my swing speed was higher but was so much of an amateur I had no idea. When I took my kids mini golfing the driving range next door was having a promotional free fitting and I went back a few days later. After about 45 minutes and a lot of trial and error he fitted me with the right clubs. At the end I was hitting it straighter and further than I ever had. I bought a discounted version of what he recomender and i play a lot better. It would be worth it to make sure you have the right clubs for you.
